📢 KEMIS vs NEMIS: What's the Difference?

Many parents and teachers are asking, "What is the difference between KEMIS and NEMIS?" Here is a simple explanation.

🔹 NEMIS (National Education Management Information System)

- Managed learner records mainly for ECDE, primary and secondary schools.
- Assigned each learner a Unique Personal Identifier (UPI).
- Supported learner registration and government capitation.
- Had limited integration with other education systems.

🔹 KEMIS (Kenya Education Management Information System)

KEMIS is the new national education management system that is replacing NEMIS.

It will:
✅ Keep one lifelong learner record from ECDE to university and TVET.
✅ Integrate learners, teachers, institutions, curriculum, finance and quality assurance into one system.
✅ Improve learner tracking during transfers and progression.
✅ Reduce duplicate records and eliminate ghost learners.
✅ Enhance planning, reporting and allocation of government resources.

In Simple Terms

NEMIS managed learner data mainly in basic education.

KEMIS is a more advanced, integrated system that connects the entire education sector in Kenya.

As schools begin onboarding to KEMIS, parents and teachers should ensure learner information is entered accurately to avoid future challenges.

Dear Parents, Guardians, and friends of our school community,

We wish to inform you that the registration of students on the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS) is currently underway at the school.

This is a crucial and urgent exercise mandated by the Ministry of Education to ensure every learner's data is accurately captured in the national database.

What you need to do:

>If you have received a request for specific documents (such as birth certificates or previous assessment numbers), please submit them to the school administration without delay.

>If you are unsure of your child's registration status, kindly clear with the class teacher or the school office as soon as possible.
