The Interview
Warming up the an interviewee also tends to put the person mere at ease. A relaxed head usually provides a better interview.
Sometimes, however we do not want the interviewee to know the questions in advance because they plan to ask questions about a conversational topic designed to catch the person by surprise. There is no rule against warming up the interviewee, but some reporters are opposed to it. Almost all agree that it should be restricted to situations in which the reporter is looking for non conversational information.
For example, a reporter should not warm up the lead if the questions deal with charges the person misappropriated funds during an election campaign.
The tough question
During the time of this writing I have been thinking about starting a workshop on interviewing techniques. I believe that "no one enjoys asking embarrassing questions.
It’s uncomfortable and difficult. But she adds: "I’ve learned that a certain toughness is required while exercising pressure on an interview, it’s important to keep in mind that you are there to get the answers, not to create a good impression. After the interview you have to write a news story, not a press release.
It helps to blame the tough questions on other people for example, questions can be phrased as follows. "Today’s newspapers report that...what is your response? " Or some of your critics say...could you clarify the situation?"
By attributing the changes to another sources, you make it clear they are not coming from you clearly/ personally.
Public officials in our systems are obligated to explain and justify their policies, decisions and actions.
TV guide once ran a picture of Stahl sneering with a line saying. Her questions range from sharp to stinging. Stahl says she developed a lot of her interviewing skills when she was anchoring Face the nation. She says she and the producers would try and guess what the newsmakers might say to various questions then fashion come backs.
Stahl said she never went on the air without a thorough blue print but to use it as a backup security that would leave her free to listen that would leaver her free to listen but to use it as a back up security that would leave her free to listen and point when a question was ducked.
Stahl said that many officials actually took lessons in how to avoid listening, how to wiggle out from under tough questions. Stalh says administration officials often admitted that their goal in coming on face the Nation was to escape without making any News.
The Surprise Question.
CBS News correspondents Mike Wallace is probably the reporters most identified with surprise questions - those that catch the interviewee off guard.
Wallace’s seemingly relaxed, easygoing style tends to disarm the individual he’s questioning His look of apparent bewilderment and confusion should by now, warn interviews that Wallace is ready to spring a trap, but the people she interviews keep taking the bait.
The scene is familiar. There’s a pause while the individual tries to figure out how Wallace knew about the person or the subject matter
