What is the purpose of education?
Our society has always struggled to agree on the purpose of education. Some say the purpose is for students to acquire factual knowledge of subjects. Others argue that the real purpose should be to motivate action. In that sense the debate really comes down to a definition of what it means to be an informed citizen, and whether citizenship goes beyond just acquiring knowledge into what obligations we have to act on that understanding.

Bill Gates once said, “Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is most important.” Technology has infiltrated all areas of life, but education seems to be somewhat resisting its grasp. There is a great controversy in today’s society regarding implementing technology in the classroom, and many parents, educators, and law makers are on both sides of this controversy. There is extensive research being conducted on the potential benefits and disadvantages of incorporating technology in the everyday classroom environment.

Technology is the pen and paper of our time, and the lens through whcih we are experiencing much of our world. Embrace and adapt!
