[09/26/15]   Metropolitan Church Education Centre was started in 2011 with 1 child and 1 teacher. It is registered as a community based organisation. The centre was set up out of empathy of the young children’s plight of illiteracy and loitering around because of lack of fees and therefore could not be admitted in the schools around. Mrs Rhodah Mutende who is a qualified teacher and the director of the centre noticed these children were coming to the Sunday school at the Metropolitan Christian church and therefore with the help of the church and own contribution, she set up this learning centre.
Metropolitan Church Education Centre provides basic education to disadvantaged children from poor background. Most of the needs of the children that include books and tuition fees are catered for by directors own donations and contributions. The establishment of the school is premised on the fact that all the children within the Kawangware informal settlement have the right to education including the right to live in a secure, dignified and humane environment. The centre has expanded in capacity since then from 1 child in 2011 to 390 children in 2015.
Poverty level is so high in this informal settlement that parents cannot afford school fees for their children and a three square meal for them. Therefore, the centre provides breakfast and lunch since the kids in the region have only 1 meal a day.
Metropolitan Church Education Centre provides a contemporary education for 390 children between the ages of 4 – 10 years old and includes the provision of a daily meal, stationery, teaching material, teacher’s wages and some infrastructure costs. Parents / Guardians are linked into the program in order for them to understand the development taking place with their children. A parent only needs to pay 5 dollars per month equivalent to 400 Kenya shillings. Centre’s main objectives include; enhancing accessibility to basic education for the less fortunate and eliminate the high level of illiteracy in the region.
