The Waldorf educational philosophy and curriculum is based on the child development models outlined by Dr. Rudolf Steiner. The Waldorf curriculum is distinguished by a conscious education of the whole person in an age-appropriate manner. The curriculum and classroom experiences are in tune with the natural rhythms and patterns of human development, through which the physical, emotion¬al, intellectual and spiritual dimensions of the child are developed. In other words, Waldorf education is a complete education, in every sense of the word. One of the most fundamental concepts that Waldorf teachers work with is that each child is unique. Teachers work with the conviction that each child has unlimited potential, talents and gifts which will be of value to the world and our future. Teachers strive to create an environment for these ‘seed' talents to blossom. It is fascinating to witness and read about "modern day" educationists, psychologists, entrepreneurs, and coaches who recognize, study and promote these approaches as the most optimally suited for education and success in our modern era. Dr. Steiner emphasized the importance of young children experiencing wonder, awe, and the feeling of gratitude for life. He was not interested in religious dogma, or felt that religious belief is the prerogative of individual families, but he did believe in creating a mood of respect and love. For the young child in particular, he stressed recognizing the beauty and wonder of nature.

Somewhere this week, a child will walk into a new classroom, meet a new teacher, make a new friend - and, as so many children do at NWST, slowly begin to feel at home. Because that’s what happens here. New faces become familiar ones. Classrooms become their spaces. And before long, a school becomes a place that feels like theirs.

This week, we welcomed our new parents for an informative and interactive induction session - a chance to ask questions, connect with one another, and get a feel for the community they’re now part of.

Term begins Wednesday, 9th September.

AI is changing the workplace. But the skills young people will need most are deeply human: communication, collaboration, creative thinking, problem-solving and the ability to think critically. A recent report from England’s National Foundation for Educational Research highlights exactly these skills.

At NWST, these skills aren’t new. They’re developed every day through: Main Lesson, class plays, festivals, craft, maths, science, art, music and Eurythmy. The future may be changing quickly. The need to raise thoughtful, creative and capable human beings isn’t. So when we think about education in an age of AI, perhaps the question isn’t simply:

“How do we prepare children for AI?”

It might be:

“How do we help children become deeply capable human beings in a world where AI is everywhere?”

That feels like a question worth sitting with.

The NWST Learning Pathway: IGCSE → IB or BTEC

At Nairobi Waldorf School Trust, students in Grades 9 and 10 follow the internationally recognised Cambridge IGCSE curriculum, taught through the Waldorf approach.

Students develop strong academic foundations through focused Main Lesson blocks, storytelling, observation, practical work and thoughtful exploration. Alongside their IGCSE subjects, they continue with Main Lesson, Eurythmy, Craft, Games and Guardian Lesson.

Students take Mathematics, English Language and English Literature, alongside a selection of Sciences, Humanities, Creative and Commercial subjects, and Languages. We recommend six IGCSE subjects, giving students academic depth while maintaining space for the wider Waldorf experience.

As students approach the end of Grade 10, they begin exploring what comes next. Through Pre-IB and Pre-BTEC sessions, students get to experience both pathways before making a decision.

From there, students can choose between the IB Diploma, with its broad and academically rigorous approach, or BTEC, with its practical, applied and project-based learning.

There is no single “better” pathway. The goal is to find the one that best fits how each student learns, what they enjoy, and where they want to go next.

The role calls for sensitive, live musical improvisation and accompaniment to support movement work with children from Kindergarten through the grades, working closely with our eurythmy teachers to bring poetry, melody, and gesture together in the classroom.

BTEC Programme at Nairobi Waldorf School Trust-Learning by Doing

At NWST, our Pearson BTEC programmes in Business and Art & Design offer students an opportunity to learn through practical experience, creativity and real-world application. Internationally recognized and career-focused, BTEC combines academic knowledge with hands-on learning. This prepares young people for further education, university, apprenticeships and employment.

Our approach brings together the BTEC “learn by doing” framework with the values of Waldorf education. Whether exploring entrepreneurship and responsible business decisions or developing their creative voice through art and design, students are encouraged to think critically, solve problems, work collaboratively and discover their own potential.
