SMASE-WECSA, meaning Strengthening of Mathematics and Science Education in Western, Eastern, Central and Southern Africa is a Pan African Association based at CEMASTEA in Nairobi Kenya. It's activities are supported by the Ministry of Education, Kenya; JICA and Member Countries. SMASE-WECSA is a collaborative Teacher Development platform with of 34 member countries. The Association was borne ou
t of the need to address common challenges that exist in the the teaching of Mathematics and Science in African countries. Such include poor pedagogic practices, limited teaching and learning resources and limited capacity in education quality assurance. SMASE-WECSA activities include Training, Technical exchange visits, Workshops and Conferences. During such forums participants discuss and share on best practices in planning and implementation of INSET programs for science and mathematics educators as well as promising and effective learner centered teaching approaches. Since its inception in 2004, SMASE-WECSA has, through its activities impressed upon member countries to see the need to institutionalize INSET in their policy and education development strategies. SMASE-WECSA aims at improving the quality of classroom practices and learner centred approaches through the Activity–Student–Experiment–Improvisation (ASEI) pedagogic paradigm and the Plan-Do-See-Improve (PDSI) approach. This is done by addressing issues of teacher attitude, pedagogy, work planning, content mastery, monitoring learning achievement well as teaching/learning materials among others.
