The University of Nairobi is set to establish the Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga Centre for Democracy (ROCD), in honour of his enduring legacy and lifelong fight for democracy. Envisioned as a premier hub for public dialogue, research and innovation in democracy, the Centre is anchored in the Faculties of Arts and Social Science - University of Nairobi , Department of Political Science and Public Administration.

In a courtesy call visit on Vice-Chancellor-UoN Prof. Ayub N. Gitau, Her Excellency Mama Dr. Ida Betty Odinga, Kenya's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), accompanied by Ms Winnie Odinga, held discussions on the Centre's establishment.

The VC stated that the Centre is more than a memorial: "We will not merely commemorate a life; we will launch an enduring University institution dedicated to advancing the democratic values, scholarship and public dialogue associated with his contribution."

Also present were Deputy Vice-Chancellors in charge of Finance and Development and Research, Innovation and Enterprise. Both described the Centre as a fitting legacy dedicated to a man who fought for democracy and constitutional development in Kenya.

Her Excellency Ida Odinga noted with pride that the Centre is a fitting tribute one that should build thinkers, not robots.
"It is the people inside that give the Centre meaning, not just the name on the outside. Let the Centre belong to you, the people," she said.

Echoing her father's lifelong commitment to democracy, Winnie Odinga reflected on how deeply he had devoted his life to its pursuit, envisioning a Centre that raises generations unafraid to ask difficult questions and examine the true value of elections.

Plans are underway for the Centre's inauguration and the inaugural Memorial Lecture on Democracy,

Tomorrow, our research fellow at KAVI-ICR at the University of Nairobi Matrona Akiso takes the stage at the Women in STEM Africa Summit 2026 in Nairobi, joining the panel “Women in Science: From Scientific Excellence to Societal Impact.”
Matrona is a 2024 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science laureate. Her research helps us understand why women are more vulnerable to HIV, and how we can build better prevention and vaccines around women’s health.

What makes her story special? She began at KAVI-ICR as a laboratory technician and has grown into an internationally celebrated scientist, proof that with curiosity, hard work and mentorship, an African woman in science can change the world.

The University of Nairobi has hosted the Flagging-Off Ceremony for the 2026 Confucius Institute Scholarship Students and the second cohort of the 2+2 Joint Programme for International Chinese Language Education Scholarship Students in Kenya.

The ceremony marked an important milestone for the students as they prepare to embark on an enriching academic journey that will provide them with opportunities to deepen their knowledge of the Chinese language and culture, broaden their international perspectives, and experience learning within a global environment.

The scholarship programmes reflect the growing opportunities for academic exchange and collaboration between Kenya and China, while strengthening people-to-people connections and fostering greater understanding between the two countries.

As the students begin this new chapter, the University of Nairobi celebrates their achievement and wishes them every success as they pursue their studies and represent Kenya on the international stage.

On August 31, 2026, the DAAD conference "German Studies in Network—Challenges and Future Prospects" officially opened at the University of Nairobi, Kenya.

Experts from Germany and partner nations in Sub-Saharan Africa met at the University of Nairobi to explore the future of German studies and German as a foreign language.

The German Ambassador to Kenya, Hon. Sebastian Groth; an official from the Division for German Schools Abroad and German as a Foreign Language at the Federal Foreign Office; Ms. Siyana Dimitrova, the Head of the Strategy and Management Division at DAAD Bonn, Ms. Nina Salden; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Human Resource and Administration, Prof. Leonida Kerubo, representing the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, the DAAD Nairobi Regional Office Director, Dr. Dorothee Weyler; and other dignitaries were present at the opening ceremony.

Following the ceremonial opening, Dr. Kokou Azamede of the University of Lomé, Togo, delivered a plenary talk on "German Studies—An Interdisciplinary Field of Research in the Service of Societies." After that, a gallery walk, combined with networking, provided insights into the various countries and academic backgrounds.

The DAAD-organised and funded conference will last five days, from August 31 to September 4, 2026, and will provide opportunities for exchange, networking, and fresh insights.
