Fasting for Ramadhan

Fasting for Ramadhan

month of ramadhan Ramadan (Arabic: رمضان) is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and the month in which the Quran was revealed.

Fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The month is spent by Muslims fasting during the daylight hours from dawn to sunset. Muslims believe that the Qur'an was sent down to the lowest heaven during this month, thus being prepared for gradual revelation by the Angel Jibraeel (Gabriel) to the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Furthermore, Muhammad told his followers that th

'As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam,

Alhamdulillah, Allah has brought us again to the blessed month of Ramadan through His Mercy—the month of striving in obedience and supplications, the month of fasting, reading the Qur'an, standing in prayer at night, and seclusion in the mosque; the month which has the Night of Decree, a single night that is better than a thousand months.

How many of our Brothers and Sisters around the world were waiting for this month and are no more! We must be mindful of the enormous privilege and blessing of witnessing this month and take care to invest these precious moments wisely.

This Ramadan, let us develop a sense of responsibility toward our Lord, ourselves, our family, and community. Let us resolve to stay away from oversleeping, idle talk, overindulging in food, extravagant parties, and wasting time on TV programs and the social media. Let us reach out to new Muslims and Muslims going through trials to make them feel part of a strong Muslim community. Let us strive hard to gain the forgiveness and blessings of our Creator, and revive the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet ﷺ.

We all need to constantly purify our intentions and seek steadfastness—what better time to take ourselves to account and renew our intentions than this blessed month?

Ramadan Mubarak, may Allah accept every good deed done sincerely for His sake.
Taqabbal Allaahu minnaa wa minkum saalihil ‘aamaal.'

Yours Islamically,
Dr. Bilal Philips

Conditions For The Validity Of
The Fast
Among the conditions for the
validity of one’s fasting is that
the person does not become
insane, not even for a moment
during the fasting day. If a
person loses his sanity during
the day or during part of the
day, even for a moment, then his
fasting would be invalidated. As
well, it is conditional for the
validity of one’s fasting that he
does not lose consciousness
during the entire fasting day,
that is, from the dawn until
sunset. If he lost consciousness
for part of the day only, this
does not invalidate the fast. On
the other hand, sleeping does
not invalidate the fast, even if
one slept all day long.
Days On Which Fasting Is
Unlawful
It is invalid to fast the day of the
Feast of Fitr (^Id-ul-Fitr), the day
of the Feast of Adha (^Id-
ul-’Adha) and the three days
after the day of Adha (Tashriq).
It is also invalid to fast the last
half of Sha^ban , and the day of
doubt except if one joins the
fasting of these with those
before them or if one is fasting
for an expiation (kaffarah), make
up (qada’), vow (nadhr), or
habitual consistent practice
(wird), like the one who usually
fasts Mondays and Thursdays.
Note:
It is unlawful (haram) to fast the
two days of ^Idul-Fitr and ^Idul-
Ad-ha, and the three days after
^Idul Ad-ha, known as the days
of Tashriq.

During the last ten days of Ramadan, Muslims seek and observe the Night of Power (Leyla al-Qadr). The Qur'an describes this night in a chapter named for it:

Surah (Chapter) 97

Al-Qadr (The Night of Power)

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

We have indeed revealed this message in the Night of Power.
And what will explain what the Night of Power is?
The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.
Therein come down the angels and the spirit, by Allah's permission, on every errand.
Peace! Until the rising of the morn!

Tradition holds that the Night of Power is the night that the first revelation of the Qur'an was sent down to the Prophet Muhammad. Muslims are instructed to "seek" the Night of Power during the last ten days of Ramadan, particularly on the odd nights (ie. the 23rd, 25th and 27th). It is reported that the Prophet said: "Whoever stays up (in prayer and remembrance of Allah) on the Night of Qadr, fully believing (in Allah's promise of reward) and hoping to seek reward, he shall be forgiven for his past sins."
