Today, the Principal Secretary for Youth Affairs and Creative Economy, Jacob Fikirini, alongside other distinguished leaders, attended the official launch of the Uriri Film Hub and Resource Centre and the graduation ceremony of more than 400 aspiring filmmakers from Rapogi, Uriri Constituency.
This milestone reflects our commitment to empowering young people with digital skills, creative industry opportunities, and the tools needed to thrive in today's economy. The hub will serve as a platform for innovation, content creation, talent development, and entrepreneurship.
Through this initiative, our youth have acquired practical skills and gained access to new opportunities within the creative economy, paving the way for sustainable livelihoods and a vibrant creative sector.

Kenya Film School, in partnership with the Kenya Film Commission and the Uriri-NGCDF Film Hub, alongside other key stakeholders in the creative industry, has officially commenced an intensive film production capacity-building programme aimed at empowering youth and emerging creatives in Migori County. The initiative reflects a collective commitment to strengthening Kenya’s creative economy through professional training, mentorship, and practical exposure in the film sector.
The training programme, running from 18th to 30th May 2026, has attracted over 200 participants drawn from different parts of Migori County and neighboring regions. The participants are undergoing intensive hands-on training in various aspects of film production, including scripting, directing, cinematography, sound production, editing, production management, and other essential areas of professional filmmaking. The sessions are being facilitated by experienced industry practitioners and trainers from Kenya Film School, ensuring practical and industry-oriented learning experiences.
The programme seeks to nurture creative talent, bridge the technical skills gap within the film industry, and position film as a viable profession and sustainable source of income for young people. By equipping trainees with technical expertise and encouraging innovation in storytelling, the initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the growth of local content creation and the development of the film industry within Migori County and beyond.
The partnership further underscores the importance of collaboration among government institutions, educational institutions, development partners, and community stakeholders in advancing opportunities within the creative arts sector. Through this training, participants will gain not only technical competencies but also the confidence, exposure, and professional foundation necessary to pursue careers in film production, entrepreneurship, and the wider creative industry ecosystem.

Today, the Kenya Film School fraternity, joined by colleagues from the Department of Film Services and former KFS Director Mrs. Rose Ochieng, visited Ngerenyi Village in Taita Taveta County to stand in solidarity with their colleague, Ms. Elizabeth Mwashigadi, and her family as they honored and celebrated the life of her daughter, Giovanna.

The delegation, led by Mr. Otieno Sije, also conveyed heartfelt messages of condolence from the Director of the Department of Film Services, Mr. Noah Otiende.

It was a deeply moving moment of unity, reflection, and shared grief, as the team came together to offer comfort, support, and prayers during this difficult time.

May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Ag. Director of Kenya Film School, Mr. Otieno Sije, alongside Ag. Deputy Director of Film Services, Minnie Ponda, today led a technical team to inspect the Uriri Film Hub in Uriri Constituency ahead of its official launch.

The visit forms part of ongoing preparations for the rollout of key capacity-building programs scheduled for April 2026. The team assessed the readiness of the facility to host a series of masterclass trainings targeting local filmmakers, music producers, actors, and other creatives within the region.

The upcoming programs will focus on Film Production, Music Production, and Drama, equipping participants with practical skills, hands-on experience, and industry knowledge necessary to thrive in the creative economy.

The Uriri Film Hub is expected to serve as a critical platform for nurturing local talent, fostering innovation, and creating opportunities for young creatives to transform their passion into sustainable livelihoods.
