The 2025 First Lady’s Mazingira Awards (FLAMA) Assessment Workshop officially opened in Nairobi. This year, 55 assessors have been convened to evaluate thousands of essays, poems and artworks submitted by learners from across the country. The process will be guided by the Chief Judge, Mr. Joseph Wambua, Director of Quality Assurance and Standards at the Ministry of Education.
Since its launch in 2023 during the Africa Climate Summit, FLAMA has grown into a national movement that is shaping environmental education across Kenya. The 2025 edition has expanded to include secondary schools, under the theme “Ending Pollution, Conserving the Environment – Komesha Uchafuzi, Hifadhi Mazingira.” Participation has doubled compared to last year, with over two thousand schools taking part, including special needs institutions. A new School Biodiversity Category, supported by GIZ, has also been introduced to encourage learners to design conservation projects and showcase innovations for protecting local ecosystems.
The outcomes of the assessment will pave the way for the FLAMA Award Ceremony, which will be held on 8th October 2025 at State House, Nakuru. The ceremony, to be graced by the First Lady, will celebrate the creativity and innovation of Kenya’s young environmental champions, followed by an Eco-Educational Trip to Lake Nakuru National Park.
The assessment working session, which is underway, is a critical step in ensuring that the voices, creativity, and vision of Kenya’s children are fairly assessed and celebrated. It is also a moment to reaffirm the guiding call of the Awards: “Mazingira Yetu, Jukumu Letu” – “The Environment is Our Responsibility”.
