โ€œWhen I was in Primary Six, I became pregnant and had to drop out of school. Sadly, the father of my child and my child both passed away. I had also been forced to leave school. FAWE identified me, together with other vulnerable teen mothers, and supported us to return to learning and acquire skills that can create opportunities for entrepreneurship. I am currently learning how to sew clothes.โ€
This was the testimony of one of the teen mothers benefiting from the FAWE Togoโ€“Plan International programme in Elavagnon, Atakpamรฉ, Togo.
Through education, skills development and entrepreneurship support, hundreds of vulnerable adolescent girls and young mothers have been given opportunities to rebuild their lives, develop livelihoods and pursue more secure futures.
The engagement was part of FAWE Africaโ€™s wider engagements in Togo and provided an opportunity to hear directly from programme participants about their experiences, achievements and aspirations.
During the visit, FAWE was represented by Dr. Kรฉkรฉli Jeannine Agounke, FAWE Africa Board Member and Founder of FAWE Togo; Ms. Tidjouguena Tรฉbayรฉa Jeannette, Chairperson of FAWE Togo; and Ms. Teresa Omondi-Adeitan, Deputy Executive Director and Head of Programmes, FAWE Africa, alongside Ms. Emmerentienne da Silveira, FAWE Togo Focal Point for the Plateaux Region; Rose Atieno, Programme Officer, FAWE Africa; and Sodji Ahli Anselme, National Coordinator, FAWE Togo.
These engagements provided valuable insights into FAWE Togoโ€™s work at community level, strengthened learning and knowledge exchange, and reinforced collaboration towards advancing education, skills development and protection for vulnerable girls and young women in Togo.

From Classrooms to Leadership: FAWE Engages Key Stakeholders in Ghana ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ญ

On 1 September 2026, FAWE held two strategic engagements in Accra, Ghana, advancing conversations on gender-responsive education, leadership and womenโ€™s participation in decision-making.

๐Ÿ“š Strengthening gender-responsive education
FAWE met with Professor Samuel Ofori Obuobisah Bekoe, Director-General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), to present FAWEโ€™s gender-responsive education models and explore opportunities to integrate elements of these models into the curriculum, teaching and learning materials.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿ’ผ Advancing womenโ€™s leadership and political participation
FAWE also engaged Hon. Comfort Doyor Cudjoe, Chair of the Parliamentary Womenโ€™s Caucus, First Deputy Majority Chief Whip and MP for Ada, to explore potential areas of collaboration around leadership and womenโ€™s participation in politics.

The engagement also provided an opportunity to share lessons from FAWEโ€™s Womenโ€™s Political Participation (WPP) Programme, implemented in partnership with International IDEA, and explore opportunities to replicate and scale approaches that support womenโ€™s meaningful participation in leadership and decision-making.

Together, these engagements reflect FAWEโ€™s commitment to connecting what happens in classrooms with womenโ€™s leadership and participation in societyโ€”because transforming education is also about preparing girls and women to lead, influence and shape Africaโ€™s future. ๐ŸŒโœจ

In countries where FAWE has a presence, the organisation works closely with Ministries of Education to strengthen efforts to keep girls in school, improve learning opportunities, and advance gender-responsive education.

On 2 September 2026, FAWE held a strategic meeting with Hon. Mama Omorou, Minister of National Education of Togo, and Kirong Patibouyou, Director of Cabinet, in Lomรฉ.

The engagement provided an opportunity for FAWE to present its work in Togo, learn more about the Ministryโ€™s education priorities and ongoing initiatives, and explore opportunities for strengthened collaboration.

The discussions reaffirmed FAWEโ€™s commitment to working with the Government of Togo to strengthen equitable opportunities for girls, while supporting national efforts to build a more inclusive and gender-responsive education system.

FAWE sought renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the organisation and the Ministry, with both parties reaffirming the importance of continued partnership in advancing girlsโ€™ education and gender-responsive education in Togo.

This morning, we were warmly welcomed to Tanzania by the FAWE Tanzania Board Chair, Dr. Mona Mwakalinga, and Board Secretary, Martha Makala, as the FAWE Africa delegation touched down for a high-impact mission.
Led by our Executive Director, Dr. Martha Muhwezi, and accompanied by Richard Chelegat (Director of Finance and Administration), Emily Gumba (Senior Programme Officer), Grace Wambua (Senior Human Resources Officer), and Martin Okhako (Programme Officer), the team is here to drive critical work including monitoring, capacity strengthening, recruitment of key staff, and supporting chapter readiness for the successful implementation of Phase II of our programme.

Yesterday Teresa Omondi-Adeitan, Deputy Executive Director and Head of Programmes of FAWE Africa, and Kossi Tsenou, Coordinator of FAWEโ€™s West and Central Africa Sub-Regional Office and Senior Communications Officer, paid a courtesy visit to the Mastercard Foundation office in Ghana, where they met with Larisa Akrofie, Program Lead, Girls Education.

The visit provided an important opportunity for the representatives to reflect on the progress of the two organisations' partnership in implementing the second chance pathway program in increasing access to Tertiary Education for marginalised young women and men. So far, over 4000 participants spread across 10 countries in Sub Saharan Africa are benefiting from the program.

FAWE is currently focusing on amplifying the voices of the young people. Further, such engagements ensure that FAWE's work remains connected to regional priorities and enhance commitment to advancing education for girls and young women.
