During the August 2026 STEAMLabs Africa Bootcamp, our young learners put their creativity and coding skills into action by designing and building their own games.

From creating characters and gameplay to programming movement, interactions, scoring and game logic, each project gave learners the opportunity to turn an idea into something they could actually play.

And behind every game was a process of testing, making mistakes, solving problems and trying again.

A teacher at St. Peter's Kotur Junior School, created this visual learning resource for “Baking, Cooking and Math” in the CBE curriculum.

His resource brings together a recipe, measurements, instructions and a data visualisation—turning a familiar everyday activity into an engaging learning experience.

Today, our young learners used Scratch to bring their game ideas to life.

Here's a glimpse of what their code was doing:

🍎 Make the apple fall
→ The code continuously moves the apple down the screen.

🥣 Check if it's caught
→ The game detects when the apple touches the bowl.

🏆 Add a point
→ The player's score increases when they catch it.

🔄 Start again
→ The apple moves to a new position for the next round.

Behind this simple game are logic, conditions, variables, problem-solving and creativity.

And it didn't all work perfectly the first time.

They made mistakes. They tested. They figured things out. They tried again.

That's the kind of learning we want to encourage: children who don't just consume technology, but learn to create with it!
