On the 7th of March, the Funza team went to Majengo Primary School once again, and worked with a new group of energetic Year 6 children! After icebreakers, including the Cinderella game and a rock-paper-scissors tournament, we divided them into 3 groups and gave them items and asked them to pitch them to us, and the group that got the most votes won prizes! Here they demonstrated how confident they were with public speaking. Stay tuned!

On the 25th of January 2020, Funza had their first session with Grade 6 and 7 students from Majengo Primary school! We played some games outside with the children to get them energized and to warmly get to know each other. Some of the games were the 'name game' and 'concentration'. Then we all spoke a bit about what we love doing with our free time, our strengths, and how we would like to improve our confidence in a circle, after which each of the executives co-ordinated team-building activities in smaller groups! Keep up with us to see how our journey with Majengo Primary school progresses!

In the 'Improvisation' session at the Funza Summit, the ability to improvise is what distinguished a good speaker from a good memorizer. Improvisation is a big part of what we emphasize as part of our goal here at Funza. During the session, we prompted the children to speak about familiar and unfamiliar objects, words, and multimedia in a variety of scenarios to improve their communication skills, tone variations, gesture, and posture when speaking.

The Let's Express Ourselves (LEO) session dealt with identifying and expressing one's emotions in a variety of ways, such as drawings, dancing, and through verbal communication. Here in Funza, we believe that effective expression forms the backbone of oratory skill builing, which is why it was vital for us to include this session in the Summit.

The innovation session was dedicated to building and bringing out the creativity, ingenuity and design skills of children, as well as promote quick thinking in unfamiliar situations. To that end, we carried out coloring and drawing activities, and the tower building activity pictured below, which led to some entertaining results! The tower building activity, in particular, was a highlight because the children were provided several unusual materials such as spaghetti and marshmallows, and told to build several structures out of them. This prompted them to communicate with each other about what they were building and how they planned to build it. This promoted collaboration and allowed children to bond with people they had never met.

Did you know that 3 out of 4 people have glossophobia? -the fear of public speaking, or 'stage fright'. This can definitely change however, because we all know just how powerful our voices can become to strike change in the world!
Yesterday Thursday 28th February 2019 we continued from our previous session on improvisational speaking, but this time focusing on presenting on more relatable events and ideas. Funza banded closely with the Coast Academy team on an individual basis for peer feedback on their speaking skills.
Giving feedback to peers, Margaret Makoba, the executive of Funza Management, highlighted key issues in public speaking that can hinder learning in the classroom, listing redundancy and excessive repetition of words to name a few.
We hope to be mindful of such details when striving for more passionate learning through speech. The Coast Academy students are already starting to improve their confidence in the sessions so far!
Watchout for our next series of sessions with warm-up preparation in other aspects of oratory skill-building with Coast Academy! @ COAST Academy international school
