Who is Jia Tan --- XZ Utils backdoor incident (2024)

Did you know a lone Microsoft engineer, Andres Freund, once discovered a vulnerability in Linux Distributions where the experimental version of XZ Utils —a compression utility integrated into many popular distributions of Linux— contained a backdoor that would have allowed hackers in possession of a specific private key to connect to the backdoored system and run their own commands as an administrator. The hacker spent more than 2 years developing this vulnerability and would have succeeded until Andres noticed that SSH logins were slightly slower — about 0.5 seconds.
