🟥 Importance of Story Drift Verification in Building Design
💠Passing the analysis stage in structural design software (e.g., ProtaStructure, ETABS, STAAD, SAP2000) does not necessarily guarantee that a building is safe for construction. One critical parameter often overlooked is Story Drift.
💠Definition of Story Drift
Story drift is defined as the lateral displacement of one floor level relative to the floor below it, typically expressed as a ratio of building height. It is evaluated in both principal directions of the structure:
Direction 1 (X-axis)
Direction 2 (Y-axis)
💠Code Requirements
International and local building codes (e.g., ASCE 7, Eurocode, NBCC) prescribe drift limits, commonly ranging between:
h/250 to h/500,
where h is the story height.
Exceeding these limits results in excessive lateral deformation, leading to serviceability and safety concerns.
💠Implications of Exceeding Drift Limits
Failure to satisfy drift checks can result in:
Excessive Sway – Discomfort to occupants, damage to non-structural elements, and code non-compliance.
Strength/Capacity Overstress – Member demand-to-capacity (D/C) ratios exceeding unity.
💠Stability Concerns (P–Δ Effects) – Amplified displacements under increasing lateral forces, leading to potential instability.
Thus, a structure may appear adequate during static analysis but fail under actual wind or seismic loading conditions.
💠Mitigation Measures
To ensure compliance and structural integrity, engineers should consider:
Introducing shear walls or bracing systems in weak directions.
💠Increasing column sizes or enhancing stiffness.
💠Strategically redistributing structural cores and walls for balanced resistance.
💠Reviewing load combinations with attention to lateral load cases.
💠Conclusion
