Did you know that choking is the fourth leading cause of unintentional injury death? π€
In case you need to save a choking victim, here's what you should do:
β
Stand behind the victim with one leg forward between the victim's legs
β
For a child, move down to their level and keep your head to one side
β
Reach around the abdomen and locate the navel
β
Place the thumb side of your fist against the abdomen just above the navel
β
Grasp your fist with your other hand and thrust inward and upward into the victim's abdomen with quick jerks
β
For a responsive pregnant victim, or any victim you cannot get your arms around or for whom abdominal thrusts are not effective, give chest thrusts from behind; avoid squeezing the ribs with your arms
β
Continue thrusts until the victim expels the object or becomes unresponsive
β
Even after choking stops, seek medical attention
What if the victim is unresponsive? β

Did you know that permanent brain damage can occur in as little as 4 minutes, when a person does not get enough air? Rapid first aid for choking can save a life! π
Choking in infants is usually caused by breathing in a small object that the baby has placed in their mouth, such as a button, coin, balloon, toy part, or watch battery.
βDO NOT perform these steps if the infant is coughing hard or has a strong cry. Strong coughs and cries can help push the object out of the airway.
If your child is not coughing forcefully or does not have a strong cry, follow these steps:
β
Lay the infant face down, along your forearm.
β
Use your thigh or lap for support.
β
Hold the infant's chest in your hand and the jaw with your fingers.
β
Point the infant's head downward, lower than the body.
β
Give up to 5 quick, forceful blows between the infant's shoulder blades. .
β
Use the palm of your free hand.
If the object does not come out of the airway after 5 blows:
β
Turn the infant face-up. Use your thigh or lap for support. Support the head.
β
Place 2 fingers on the middle of the breastbone just below the ni***es.
β
Give up to 5 quick thrusts down, compressing the chest one third to one half the depth of the chest.
β
Continue 5 back blows followed by 5 chest thrusts until the object is dislodged or the infant loses alertness (becomes unconscious).
What if the infant loses alertness? β

Recent statistics have shown that the earlier CPR is performed, the higher the chances of survival after . Nearly 45 percent of out-of-hospital victims survived when bystander CPR was administered.
Letβs break down how long it takes for brain damage and brain death to occur after cardiac arrest:
0-4 minutes: brain damage is not likely; chances of and are high β
4-6 minutes: brain damage could occur; reaching the beginning of brain death π§
6-10 minutes: brain damage is likely; the person may suffer ongoing issues after being resuscitated β‘
10+ minutes: brain death is likely to occur; very slim chance of a person regaining consciousness or surviving at all π
