Report: UK and US Still See Africa Through a Lens of Poverty, Corruption, and Nature
What do people in the UK and the U.S. think about Africa? Do their perceptions reflect negative media portrayals?
And if so, how do these stereotypes shape their behaviour and willingness to experience the continent through economic, cultural, and other opportunities?
These questions are at the heart of a new report titled Stereotypes About Africa in Britain and the United States: A Social-Psychological Study of Their Impact on Engagement with Africa.
The research, a collaboration between Africa No Filter and the University of Bath, surveyed 1,126 participants in the UK and the U.S. to explore how people think about Africa — and how those thoughts influence their interest in the continent’s products, cultures, and broader engagement.
An additional 863 U.S. participants were surveyed to examine how negative views might be reshaped through positive narratives.

Tariff-free access to help Africa boost trade.
As Western countries shift gears and retreat into protectionism by erecting nontariff barriers and slapping tariffs as high as 50 percent on African countries, China's sweeping 100 percent duty-free access to 53 African nations marks a historic pivot.
The China-Africa Changsha Declaration on Upholding Solidarity and Cooperation of the Global South, released on June 11, not only offers a lifeline to a region struggling to navigate unequal global trade architectures, but also presents an opportunity for international trade policy shifts.
This is an opportunity for Africa to act decisively and leverage its burgeoning youth population, strategic raw materials and untapped industrial potential.

The Hidden Costs of Africa’s Liberation Struggles
An increasing number of African freedom fighters are passing away in foreign lands, far from the countries they once risked everything to liberate from colonial domination.
Men and women who fought valiantly for their independence now draw their last breaths in quiet corners of London, Paris, Washington and other former imperial capitals.
Many of their descendants no longer hold African passports, instead, they possess the citizenship of the very nations their forebears battled against. This contradiction raises the question! Were Africa’s liberation wars a betrayal, a fraud or merely a deferred dream?

Borders and Betrayals: Legal Xenophobia in the Age of Regional Pretence
When regional lawyers—armed with no weapons but their robes, intellect, and moral courage—are denied entry into fellow African jurisdictions under the guise of immigration discretion or national sovereignty, the entire edifice of East African solidarity collapses into legal hypocrisy. What is law if it does not serve justice? And what is regional integration if it collapses at the footsteps of a border gate?
