On 13 July, we launched our project 'GenZ and Politics' at Alliance Française Nairobi. We started the evening by watching the documentary 'Retracing Kenya's Songs of Protests (Music as a Force of Change in Kenya: 1963-2013). This was followed by a lively panel discussion featuring activists and artists, including Njuki Githethwa, Neema Kwekwe, Ndungi Githuku and Mwongela Kamencu. Finally, we enjoyed a moving performance by Dorphanage Mutuma and Vitalis Maembe.

Yesterday, Prof. Henri Médard presented his latest book 'Homos*xuality in Precolonial Africa: Gender Innovation & the Politics of S*x in the Kingdom of Buganda (1880-1900)'. Inspired by few sources on same s*x relations in Africa, he explored missionary sources about Buganda because of their obsession with African s*xual practices.

📖 Book launch - Homos*xuality in Precolonial Africa: Gender Innovation & the Politics of S*x in the Kingdom of Buganda (1880-1900) by Prof. Henri Médard

Studying s*xuality can be challenging across the world but the scarcity of written sources and the selective and censored memory of oral sources make it even more challenging on Africa. However, the Kingdom of Buganda (today part of Uganda) in the late 19th century offers an exceptionally well documented case study with detailed African and European sources. In 1886, Christians were persecuted and executed by order of King Mwanga. They were latter canonised and made into Saints by the Catholic Church. Sources on this event provide an extraordinary wealth of information on men that have s*x with men. This collection of unusual historical sources provides a unique opportunity to understand homos*xuality as an African phenomenon.
This work aims to shed light on Buganda in the late 19th century, unpacking the ways in which the understanding of men who have s*x with men changed during the last decades of the 19th century and how homophobia was then politicised. Homos*xuality provides a lens for key aspects of political relationships in Buganda during this period, which saw a Christian oligarchy and the British colonial rulers establish a new order on the ruins of an African kingdom shaken by an ideological crisis.

🔖Administration of Justice for Urban Refugees in Kenya: Perspectives of Legal Experts

International and national protection frameworks guarantee refugees the right to access to justice. However, the urbanization of forced displacement in Kenya has reconfigured this refugee protection regime. Unlike the traditional and humanitarian justice systems established in camps, refugees residing in urban areas rely on domestic judicial systems. This shift creates a state of dual vulnerability where their legal status overlap with the structural marginality of informal urban settlements. By focusing on the viewpoint’s legal experts’, this study demonstrates that there is a systemic disconnect between recognised rights and the administration and access to justice in practice. Institutional exclusions, bureaucratic red tapes, and fragmented law enforcement have turned the pursuit of legal redress into a contested process. Access to justice is thus shaped more by professional discretion and spatial inequalities than by formal constitutional guarantees.
