Another win for the environment and conservation efforts. 🌿⚖️

The Green Belt Movement, together with JustAct welcomes the decision by the Environment and Land Court to halt the ongoing construction of a road through Ngong Road Forest pending the hearing of the case on 15th September 2026.

This is not about opposing development, it is about ensuring that development respects the Constitution, environmental laws and the rights of present and future generations.

Ngong Road Forest is a vital urban ecosystem that safeguards biodiversity, stores carbon, protects water catchments, improves air quality and provides an invaluable green space for Nairobi residents.

As Kenya advances its ambitious tree-growing and landscape restoration agenda, we must pursue infrastructure solutions that protect, rather than sacrifice, our public forests.

We remain committed to lawful, evidence-based conservation and sustainable development that balances people, nature and progress.

The Green Belt Movement and JustAct welcome the Environment and Land Court’s decision to suspend the proposed developments in Imenti Forest pending the hearing and determination of the consolidated petitions. This is an important step in upholding the Constitution, environmental justice and every Kenyan’s right to a clean and healthy environment.

A legacy comes full circle. 🌍🌱

Today, the Green Belt Movement was honoured to host Center for African Studies at the University of Pittsburgh alongside the Wangari Maathai Foundation and the Wangari Maathai Institute, for a meaningful conversation on the future of environmental leadership, research and innovation.

This gathering carried a special significance. More than six decades ago, Prof. Wangari Maathai pursued her Master’s degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, where she encountered a city transforming itself from the effects of industrial pollution. That experience deepened her understanding of the relationship between healthy ecosystems, human well-being and sustainable development, insights that would later inspire the founding of the Green Belt Movement and her lifelong commitment to environmental justice.

Today, that connection continues to grow.

As we strengthen relationships between institutions that carry Prof. Maathai’s vision, we open new opportunities for collaborative research, knowledge exchange, youth leadership, ecological restoration, climate resilience and community-driven solutions that respond to today’s environmental challenges.

The challenges before us demand partnerships that bridge continents, connect science with indigenous knowledge and translate research into meaningful action for people and the planet.

Prof. Wangari Maathai often reminded us that ”it’s the little things citizens do that will make the difference.” Through collaborations such as these, those little things become collective action with the power to shape a more sustainable future.

While respecting the independence of the Court, we reaffirm that development must never come at the irreversible expense of Kenya’s critical ecosystems, water towers and biodiversity. We call for sustainable development that safeguards our natural heritage for present and future generations.

The Kenyan Justice System Has Yet Again Failed Our Ecosystems. The approval of the 52km road through the Aberdare ecosystem marks a deeply disappointing moment for environmental protection in Kenya.

For many Kenyans, this outcome raises difficult questions about whether our legal and governance systems are providing the level of protection that our Constitution envisages for our forests, water towers and biodiversity.

The Aberdares are a critical water tower, a climate regulator, a biodiversity hotspot and the source of livelihoods for millions.

When protected ecosystems are compromised, future generations pay the price.

Development must never come at the expense of the natural systems that sustain life.
