What does it take for a family business to thrive across generations?

For Africaโ€™s family-owned enterprises, building a successful business is only part of the journey. Sustaining that success requires strong governance, thoughtful succession planning and strategic wealth stewardship, structures that can help families navigate transitions, preserve value and build resilient enterprises that stand the test of time.

Recognising this need, Strathmore University, has partnered with Standard Chartered Kenya, ALN Kenya | Anjarwalla & Khanna & the Association of Family Business Enterprises (AFBE), to develop the Governance & Wealth Management for Large Corporate Family Businesses Programme 2026.

Speaking during the launch event this morning, Dr. Vincent Ogutu, Vice Chancellor, Strathmore University, noted that family businesses remain central to Africa's economic development and long-term prosperity: "Family businesses have played a pivotal role in driving economic growth across Africa. Their continued success depends not only on entrepreneurial vision, but also on strong governance, responsible leadership and effective succession planning. This programme reflects Strathmore University's commitment to developing leaders and institutions that create sustainable impact for generations to come."

Edith Chumba, Head of Wealth & Retail Banking, Kenya and East Africa, Standard Chartered Bank, noted the timeliness of this partnership with Strathmore Business School (SBS), noting that Standard Chartered is keen on supporting families with the insights and tools they need to build resilient institutions, prepare future leaders and preserve wealth across generations.โ€

This executive programme brings together expertise in , , and practice to equip founders, next-generation leaders, family office representatives, board members and senior executives with practical tools to strengthen family business governance

Running from September to November 2026, the Programme will combine three intensive learning modules with post-Programme mentoring, enabling participating businesses to translate learning into practical governance, succession and wealth management roadmaps.

Leadership is not about the title you hold it is about the impact you leave behind.

Today, Strathmore University Business School, in partnership with Jubilee Group, proudly celebrated the graduation of the Jubilee Middle Level Leadership Programme, marking the successful completion of a transformative leadership journey for four cohorts of middle-level managers committed to leading with purpose and creating lasting impact.

Opening the ceremony, Dr. Caesar Mwangi, Executive Dean of Strathmore University Business School, highlighted that although business performance was essential, people remained the driving force behind every successful organization. He indicated that the programme had been established to develop leadership skills, identify opportunities, and grow leaders with compassion, urging graduates to keep in mind that people would always remember how they were made to feel by their leaders.

Explaining the programme's details, Dr. Joan Gitahi urged graduates to think about one single powerful question, which was "Who am I when no one needs me?" She encouraged them to develop self-awareness, hear inner voices, and develop mindset that helps one to be a courageous and authentic leader. She informed graduates that a leader, who could not hear voices inside him, would never be able to hear them outside.

On behalf of the Jubilee Group, the organization reiterated its stance on the intentional development of leaders at all organizational levels. The graduates were advised that their success in the program would not be judged from the number of certificates they would have attained; rather it would be measured by the way in which they use their skills as a leader through integrity, empathy, and continuous learning to develop better teams and organizational culture as well as sustained business performance.

The graduation ceremony took on an added significance through the inspirational thoughts expressed by the class presidents. Their remarks included the need for leaders to open opportunities for other people, develop positive organizational culture, ask better questions, and transform into transformational leaders who will bring about change wherever they are serving. They challenged their colleagues to see the graduation ceremony as just the beginning of the process.

Congratulations to all the graduates of the Jubilee Middle Level Leadership Programme As you return to your organizations, let the courage to lead and inspire others to excel remain with you, leaving behind a legacy not just based on performance but also leaders whom you have nurtured.

Across East and Central Africa, over 304 Sisters-led social ministries are transforming into thriving, self-sustaining social enterprises through the Sisters Blended Value Project (SBVP). We are driving this change through four core pillars:

๐ŸŽ“ Social Enterprise Development: Equipping Sisters with practical enterprise development skills
๐Ÿ“Š Action-Oriented Research: Co-designing innovative models and case studies to guide best practices for sustainable social ministries
๐Ÿค Access to Market and Collaborative Networks: Opening doors for cross-sector partnerships
๐Ÿ’ผ Access to Finance: Helping Catholic Sisters access funding to scale their impact

It is these intervention pillars that have enabled us to create an ecosystem change and earned us the KEPSA SME Ecosystem Enabler of the Year 2026! ๐Ÿ†
