The Hanka Education Centre in Mathare Slum was founded in 2009 to provide slum kids with Primary Education (Classes 1 to 8 ). It all began with four voluntary teachers caring for twenty children. In the past years, the number of teachers increased to nine, now responsible for 168 students. So far, Hanka managed to separate the huge hall it originally was into individual classrooms, to cover the fl
oor with concrete paving and to provide breakfast as well as lunch for the children. However, serious problems still remain:
The iron sheets the school´s walls consist of are rusty and threaten to cut the kids. Due to a lack of desks, some of the children have to sit on the floor, making it almost impossible to write and increasing the risk of getting sick. Furthermore, they are short of pens, pencils, other stationary and textbooks, which are only available for teachers. This page is supposed to keep you informed about all the progress the school and kids make. All of us are voluntary interns at Hanka and we teach the kids in various subjects such as Maths and English. Our desire is to show them that the world is not only made out of metal sheets and encourage them to live a better life. Even the smallest help means a big step towards a happier future. We will appreciate your contribution in the school fundraising, so they will get a chance to extend their talents and strenghts. We can assure that every single cent is used for its intended purpose:
A desk for three kids can be bought for 10€, a square metre of iron sheet is 2,50€ and a textbook costs about 5€. You will receive a special reward - a postcard written and decorated by the kids, and we will keep you posted on every step we take. Together we make a change!
