Hygiene in schools

The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Mr. Ezekiel Machogu has asked heads of schools to ensure that food they serve to learners is safe for eating.



He said the water used for cooking and drinking at the school must regularly be inspected to avoid possible harm if the water is not properly treated.



Mr. Machogu made the remarks during Kenya Education Management Institute’s (KEMI) 7th graduation ceremony at Jamhuri high school ground today.



Mr. Machogu said that training of managers goes a long way in realizing the central role that they play in the management of the institutions of learning.



Some 2519 graduands, drawn from heads of schools and their deputies, received Diploma in Education Leadership and Management.



The Cabinet Secretary asked teachers to desist from meting out corporal punishment to students saying the practice was criminal.



“Once a teacher indulges in it is a criminal activity,” Mr. Machogu said.



The CS said the Government had sent Shs.9.6 billion to the Junior Secondary Schools saying school heads should use the disbursements prudently.



He said the government, through the Presidential Working Party on education Reforms, will address the curriculum load by reducing the number of subjects being taught.



He said the government, in partnership with the World Bank, will equip science laboratories in JSS.



Present during the occasion included the Chairperson of KEMI governing Council, Dr. Mercy Karogo, and the Chief Executive Officer of KEMI, Dr. Maurice Odondo, representatives from State Corporations in the Ministry, council members and the management of the institute
