"I would like to start by emphasizing that this UN Migration Pre-International Womenโs Day (IWD) 2026 High -Level Panel Discussion on Rights, Justice and Action for Women in migration could not have come at a better time. The deteriorating and loss of livelihoods due to climate change, geopolitical alignments and conflicts, growing inequalities and poverty, among other global and societal challenges, make migration an important issue for discussion.
Women form about 50 percent of all migrants internationally. The movements cross international borders in pursuit of life opportunities and goals. For instance, women and girls may move to improve their lives through study, career development, or join families. Women and girls may also migrate to deal with life challenges such as poverty, political strife, insecurity and violence. Today we have environmental refugees, migrants fleeing loss of livelihoods due to climate change-related impacts.'
