ASSIMILATION OF /t/ and /p/ IN BRITISH PRONOUNCE

Assimilation of sound means changing a phoneme/sound to become similar/identical to other nearby/neighboring sounds

For example, In rapid speech, native speakers of English tend to pronounce " ten bucks" as "tembucks".

The sound /n/ has been assimilated/changed to /m/ because the sound that is both a nasal like /n/ and a bilabial like /b/ is /m/. Therefore in anticipation of the sound that is ahead - that is /b/- /n/ is therefore assimilated to /m/ to make it easier to pronounce /b/.

Ok lets leave out all this linguistic nerd stuff out and just try to simply assimilate sounds /t/ and /p/ in peace😃

In British pronounce, /t/ changes to /p/ before /m/, /b/, /p/

Try pronouncing these rapidly as you listen to yourself

basket maker ( pronounced as 'baskepmaker' )
white paper ( 'waippaper' )
best man ( bespman )
cat buglar ( capbuglar )
Cigarette paper ( cigareppaper)
circuit board ( circuipboard )
mixed bag ( mixepbag )
harvest moon ( harvespmoon )

That will be all for today. Catch more lessons on HOT254 MEDIA YouTube Channel.
