Which is harder, IGCSE May/June or October/November? There is no significant difference in the level of difficulties between May/June and October/November Papers. The best way to confirm this is let your friend prepares for you about 10 multiple choice papers in any subject. The papers should not have years or any mark that can help you identify time it was done. Five should be from May/June and the other remaining 5 from October/November. Do the papers, let him/her mark and record get the mean for May/June and October/November. You will probably notice that there is no significant difference between the means. You can confirm this by conducting a t-test using MS excel.

What is the difference between IGCSE Core and Extended is a question that linger in the minds of many students. I have labored to understand why University of Cambridge have two sets of contents for all subjects. The lighter/easier version is called core while the comprehensive version is called extended. I guess core was intended for students who have difficulties/challenges in these subjects or those who want to major in other fields and are not necessarily keen on getting high grades on these subjects. Although taking core saves a student from some complex concepts in the subject, the maximum grade for a student taking core in any subject is C and the minimum is G. On the other hand, the extended content opens for a student the possibility of getting A*, but the same student can also get E. So, it is a double-edged sword. So which should you choose? My answer has always been extended. I have few reasons for this choice. First, the core and extended contents do not differ significantly. I believe, a student can capitalize on the content learned in core section to understand a complex concept in extended section. For example, once a student is introduced to enlargement scale factor in core section of Mathematics, the same student can understand the concept of negative scale factor where the object and image are in the opposite side of the center of enlargement. Second, even a weak student in any subject can start to develop interest in the subject and eventually improve and get upper grades. If you take core irrespective of your effort, the maximum grade you can get is C.
Since I began teaching IGCSE in the year 2010, my students have on many occasions sought my views about which system of education,IGCSE or 8-4-4, is the most superior. As a student of Comparative Education, I have been very hesitant to endorse any, because as my good professors taught me, each system of education has its historical and cultural context. Unfortunately, my students would not allow me to first discuss these contexts. Nevertheless, UK has one of the most developed human capital, thanks to its education. Kenya on the other hand, has one of the most brainy people. So the issue here is not about superiority, it is about what contribution does 8-4-4 or IGCSE makes to national development? In my own assessment IGCSE contributes a lot because it is more practical oriented 8-4-4 breeds theorists and this is the problem we must fix..
I am often asked this question, "Can I get admitted into Kenyan university with IGCSE certificate?" My answer is "Yes, but not all universities." Unfortunately, all public universities do not accept direct entry of IGCSE certificate holders into their bachelor programs. The safest way would be to get A-Level certificate because this is the equivalent certificate used by most universities even abroad. Nonetheless, there are good number of private universities in Kenya that admits students with IGCSE certificate. They include USIU, KCA, African Nazarene, St. Pauls, Strathmore, Management University of Africa, Daystar and Riara. The only barrier is that you must get upper passes in at least 4 or 5 subjects required for that particular course. Again, this depends on the university.
