Revision guidelines on paper 1
1. Without using mathematical tables or a calculator, evaluate, more emphasis on nth root concept
2. Use tables to evaluate, put more emphasis on reciprocals, square roots and cube roots
3. Determine the equation of a straight line put more emphasis on
(a)Find the equation of a line given gradient and one point
(b)Find equation of parallel lines
(c)Find equation of perpendicular lines
4. Statistics (form 2) put more emphasis on
(a)Finding the mean, median of ungroup data
(b)Finding the mean median of group data
(c)Drawing histograms using frequency density concept
5. Vectors (section I or II)
6. Surface are of solids put more emphasis on frustrum concept (cone or pyramid)
7. Linear motion put more emphasis on
(a)Relative speed
(b)Interpretation of speed/distance time graph
8 commercial arithmetic I and II put more emphasis on
(a)currency exchange concept
(b)Commissions concept
(c) Ratio of the contributions by the partners.

There was a drop in last year’s mathematics performance, it’s not that student and teachers didn’t prepare well but there were new trends in place.
KCSE PP1 Q 20 (bearing topic)
Many students attempted this equation, to many it seemed easy as it required more of a psychomotor skills. What they don’t know is that it was strictly marked.
Rule no 1 all the arrows point to the north poles MUST be parallel to each other if not penalize fully (all the 10 marks gone)
Rule no 2 accuracy level.
Candidates were required to write the measurement of DA, so for example if one drew it accurately but didn’t measure DA accurately. Let’s say a candidate measured his/her DA length and wrote 8.7cm or 8.9cm and the examiner measured the candidate’s DA and found it to be 8.8cm, the candidate is penalized fully hence forth. This means that no marks were awarded for Q20 (b)(i), (ii) and (c) just because of a slight mistake(Accuracy)) made in measuring DA Q20 (b)(i). Acquaint yourself with the new trends.

KCSE PP1 Question3 was attempted many majority of the candidates. Many failed to score a mark not because they didn’t know how to do it but just that they did it wrongly even though they got the correct answer. Remember there are no marks for wrong method with the right answer. So where did they go wrong?
Part of the instructions stated that “All your workings must be clearly shown as must be awarded for correct working even if the answer is wrong.”
They misinterpreted the stated instruction by canceled their working in every step. The examiners considered the steps as canceled work. This mistake is common to not only students but also to many mathematics teachers. So do not cancel your work not unless you don’t want it marked. Acquaint yourself with the new trends.
