HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY TRAINEES
Supporting hospitality trainees during their industrial attachments and internships is not optional—it is a professional responsibility. Effective trainee support creates a meaningful learning experience that bridges academic theory with practical application while shaping the future workforce of the hospitality industry.
Unfortunately, some managers neglect trainees, forgetting that they too once stood in the same position. This mindset is damaging not only to trainees but to the long-term sustainability of the industry itself.
We must intentionally hold the hands of trainees by designing well-planned, structured, and coordinated trainee programmes that inspire them to love and respect the hospitality profession.
The industry we enjoy today is built by those who were mentored yesterday. In ten years’ time, many current professionals will be retired—leaving behind a critical question:
*Who did you mentor?* *Whose hand did you hold?*
*Can you confidently say you shaped someone’s career?*
Effective trainee support includes:
- Structured learning through job shadowing and departmental rotations
- Assignment of practical, supervised tasks in guest services and operations
- Mentorship from experienced and committed professionals
- Exposure to operational systems such as Property Management Systems (PMS)
- Encouragement of logbook completion for reflection and accountability.
- A supportive team environment with clear guidance and constructive feedback.
When trainees are properly guided, they develop essential real-world competencies such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and customer service excellence. More importantly, they gain confidence, professional discipline, and a genuine passion for hospitality.
Mentorship is not a favor—it is a legacy. The future of hospitality depends on what we invest in trainees today.
Regards,
Dr. Enock Alumasi Makanga..

The Port of Mombasa marked the arrival of the first cruise ship of the year this morning as MV Crystal Symphony sailed into port. The luxury liner returned to Kenya on a second call with more than a thousand guests on board, having last visited in its inaugural voyage last year.
Stretching 238 meters long with a draft of 8 metres, the ship arrived from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. It will spend one full day in Mombasa before its journey continues toward India. The tourists will spend their time experiencing Kenya’s famous wildlife parks, tour Mombasa’s vibrant streets, and see other local attractions.
Crystal Symphony’s Cruise Entertainment Director, Ms. Vicky Vantassel, said her guests were thrilled to be back. “We’ve received such a warm welcome,” she noted. “Everyone is excited to explore Kenya, even if just for the day.”
Kenya Ports Authority’s Corporation Secretary and General Manager Board and Legal Services, Mr. Turasha Kinyanjui, reaffirmed the port’s commitment to growing cruise tourism.
Speaking on behalf of Managing Director Captain William Ruto, Kinyanjui said the port is dedicated to improving guest experiences by upgrading facilities and ensuring cooperation with all relevant partners.
The MV Crystal Symphony’s visit signals a busy season ahead. Several more cruise vessels are scheduled to dock in Mombasa in the coming weeks, promising a steady stream of visitors and a welcome boost for local tourism.
Also present during the welcome reception was Ms. June Chepkemei the CEO of Kenya Tourism Board and senior officials from the county government of Mombasa.

YOUR CV IS YOUR SELLING POINT — TAKE IT TO THE BANK
- Having a well-prepared CV gives you the opportunity to present the very best of yourself to a prospective employer or organization.
- Your CV is not just a document—it is your personal marketing tool.
- A strong CV sells your skills, experience, competence, and suitability for the role. In today’s highly competitive hospitality job market, making a powerful first impression is non-negotiable.
- Unfortunately, many CVs are prepared hurriedly, poorly structured, and outdated. As a result, they are disqualified at the very first stage. Even worse, many applicants fail to follow basic recruitment instructions—leading to automatic rejection.
*Key Elements of a Strong Hospitality CV*
🔹 *Clear Area of Expertise*
Your CV must clearly indicate your professional specialization, such as:
-General Manager
-Rooms Division Manager
-Operations Manager
-Hot Kitchen Chef
-Pastry & Bakery Chef
-Executive Housekeeper
-Front Office Professional
-Laundry Specialist.
- This should be immediately visible. Human Resources Manager should identify your expertise at a glance.
🔹 *Accurate Contact Details*
- Use clear and reachable telephone numbers.
- Having two active phone numbers is highly recommended.
- Use a professional email address—avoid nicknames.
- Ensure your social media profiles reflect professionalism, as some employers review them to assess your industry engagement and conduct.
🔹 *Follow Recruitment Instructions Strictly*
If an employer requests:
CV only → Do not attach documents
PDF format → Do not send Word or other formats
Many HR departments use automated recruitment systems that reject non-compliant CVs instantly.
- At Victory Global Impact Africa, CVs that do not follow instructions are automatically rejected.
🔹 *Logical Career Flow*
- Your CV should clearly show your professional journey—from college to your current engagement—without gaps or confusion.
🔹 *Continuous Professional Development*
- Short courses, workshops, and industry trainings give you a competitive advantage.
*Remember* :
- Everyone has certificates, diplomas, and degrees.
- What sets candidates apart is what they have done after college.
- Hospitality professionals who invest in continuous learning stand a much higher chance during shortlisting.
🔹 *Choose Referees Carefully..*
A referee must:
Know you well professionally
Be credible and supportive
Give positive and accurate feedback
Always seek permission before listing someone as a referee. The wrong referee can cost you a great opportunity.
*Why CVs Fail*
- Many highly competent professionals miss out on excellent opportunities—not because they lack qualifications, but because their CV fails to present them as the right candidate.
- Your CV is your spokesperson.
- It is your first impression.
- It must speak confidently and professionally on your behalf.
*Qualities Every Winning CV Must Have*
✔ Concise – 2 to 3 pages maximum. Recruiters don’t read long stories.
✔ Achievement-Focused – Duties tell, achievements sell. Show measurable results.
✔ Easy to Read – Clean layout, clear headings, simple structure.
✔ ATS-Friendly – Avoid complicated designs; use simple templates.
✔ Tailored – Stop using one CV for every job. Customize it to the role.
*Take a moment today and review your CV, it's competitive.*
