TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR GLOBAL TEACHER AWARD

For a period of five years after the awarding of the Prize to the winner, the winner must continue to teach or provide educational support to students between the ages of 5 and 18 in a school setting unless he or she retires.

The Global Teacher Prize winner is also required to serve as Global Ambassador for Varkey Foundation for the next five years.

“Serving as Global Ambassador for VF shall include but not be limited to attending events, speaking to the media, undertaking training and other commitments outside of working hours, on weekends and/or on holidays. VF will pay for and arrange all travel and accommodation,” says the foundation.

The Varkey Foundation is a a family organization established to improve standards of education and raise the status and capacity of teachers throughout the world.

Mr. Tabichi, a Mathematics and Physics teacher at Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Pwani Village, Nakuru won the prize for dedicating his life to helping others.

He gives 80% of his teaching salary to local community projects, including education, sustainable agriculture and peace-building.

“He’s changed the lives of his students in many ways, including the introduction of science clubs and the promotion of peace between different ethnic groups and religions. He has also helped to address food insecurity among the wider community in the famine-prone Rift Valley,” said the Varkey Foundation.

Mr. Tabichi, who becomes the first African and male teacher to win the global award, emerged winner out of 10 finalists and 10,000 applicants from across the world.

The International General Certificate ofSecondary Education (IGCSE) is an English language curriculum offered to students to prepare them forInternational Baccalaureate, A Level andBTEC Level 3 (which is recommended for higher-tier students). It is based on the GCE O-Level and is recognised as being equivalent to the GCSE. The IGCSE was developed by University of Cambridge International Examinations. The examination board Edexcel offers its own version, the Edexcel International GCSE. Most Students begin learning the syllabus at the beginning of Year 10 (Grade 9) and take the test at the end of Year 11 (Grade 10).

The IGCSE is an international alternative to many national curricula, IGCSE qualifications are based on individual subjects of study, which means that one receives an "IGCSE" qualification for each subject one takes. For this reason, schools worldwide have different expectations about how many IGCSEs students should take. Typical "core" curricula for IGCSE candidates include a First Language, Second Language, Mathematics and one or more subjects in the Sciences. IGCSE candidates can choose a number of additional courses ranging from Social Sciences to Creative Arts.

The IGCSE is predominantly exam-based, meaning they are not actual certified "courses", but rather exams that test knowledge in individual subjects in the same way as Advanced Placement exams and SAT Subject Tests. For this reason, it is also a viable option for many home-schooling educators or in Adult education, when one is seeking a qualification but has no time to attend full-time school classes.

Its academic worth is comparable to many secondary school curricula worldwide, such as England's GCSE, the North American GED or high school diploma, Hong Kong's HKCEE,[1]Singapore's O-Level,[2] and the IndianCBSE or ICSE courses. I have been asked a question,

"Why have our children become unruly, doing drugs, becoming Al-shabaab or joining terror groups or burning schools professor?"

Wah, this is a heavy question but as a Professor of Sociology, I would like to have an answer to this question using Socialization Theory.

Socialization theory provides the way or road map through which human beings acquire behaviour, good or bad.

For Socialization to occur, good or bad, there must be agents of that Socialization.

There are five agents of Socialization propounded by sociological theorists to include:

1: The family
2: Peers/friends
3: The School
4: The Mosque or Church and
5: The Mass Media

Today, we begin with: The Family

This is the basic unit of society and can be single, nuclear, extended or other forms of family. It has the responsibility of reproduction and socializing children.

Socialization is spearheaded by parents, siblings and significant others in the family as role models or guiders and counsellors of behaviour.

The family being a primary agent plays the biggest role ever in making a child, good or bad behaved, successful or failure in life.

Part of my answer therefore is whether as parents we are doing our part well in socializing our children? A bad or good behaved child is a reflection of parents.

"Tell me your parents and I can predict your behavior "

One of the things that can cause ill health to a parent is the attitude of the child. When a child grows into a problem, the parents cannot sleep with the two eyes closed. When respected members of the community have children that are an embarrassment to them, then you can be sure all won't be well in that home.

Today, we are talking about kindergartners doing drugs, dancing one corner, talking crap, etc.

To raise a child successfully is not a lazy parents' work. It takes guts, courage, passion, determination, risks, strength, self control, consistency, fervent prayer.

I see mothers in church. Their kids will be moving from one part of the church auditorium to another during service and they won't correct the child. When the deacons complain, they say "leave him he's just a child". The mother is indirectly telling others not to interfere. Trust me, they won't.

I see mothers buy sweets for babies that don't even have teeth because they don't want the child to cry. So every time the baby wants sweets, he cries and sweet comes. Who's the boss?

Parents will be praying and the child will be moving from place to place or open eyes to be looking, or even be crying for something. They'll say, "leave him he's a baby". The child grows up without respect for God, worship or authority. Whose fault?

It's school time and the child cries for all the snacks in the shop, buy juice, buy this brand of biscuit, buy that colour of toys. The mother thinks its cool and say, "leave him he's just a baby". Then when the child grows up to always want to have his own way, to always want everyone to do his will, someone will say, he's naughty.

Parents complain that school assignment is too much for their child in his presence. The child grows up to do selective work.

House help does all the dirty work, kitchen chores, etc while the kids watch cartoon. Tomorrow the parents want the child to take care of the house. Who trained him in that line?

A Child shows signs of greed, disobedience, violence, rudeness, etc. and the parents excuse bad behaviour because they have gone to school and have travelled abroad, and read child psychology, and know human rights and ..... lots more.

Now the child is older and has obviously become an embarrassment to the parents. He is rude, saucy, steals, lies, lazy, beats up siblings, talks back at parents, doesn't sit still in public etc and the parents want a magic cure. They blame the school, they blame the house help, they blame the devil, they blame everyone except themselves.
They say the child is stubborn but No child is born stubborn. God doesn't give stubborn children.

It is true that God trains our children but parents must work hard. Start early. Start discipline from the stomach. Let the child know who is boss. Be consistent in discipline. Be strict. Be firm.

As the child reaches each growth hurdle, your words, eyes, actions of reproof will serve as guide and guard.

Don't think your child will hate you. Don't think your child will think you hate him. No.
When its time to play with your kids, play well. When its time to reprimand or punish, don't hold back.

To enjoy good health in old age, parents should start bending the fish now.
Work for the night is coming.
Look for the black sheep before darkness sets in.
Make the sacrifice today so that you can get the blessings tomorrow.
