Just before the International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai China, we had the Kenya team attempt the first edition of the Kings International Mathematical Olympiad (KIMO) and they did not disappoint.

Gilbert Amani Ongoro got a silver medal, Baraka Mulwa got a bronze medal and Shawn Tanui an Honorable mention. Congratulations to our champions once again for the hard work and dedication leading to an amazing performance.

This was the inaugural KIMO organized by previous IMO contestants and coaches and helps teams prepare for the IMO. The contest is done virtually under some video monitoring. The Kenyan team took the test at CEMASTEA on the 9th and 10th of July 2026.

This first pilot edition of KIMO brought together participants from 15 countries across Asia, Africa, and Europe: Armenia, Bhutan, Georgia, Iraq, Israel, Kenya, Latvia, Mauritania, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, South Korea, Syria, Tajikistan, and Tanzania.

Kenya participated in the International Mathematical Olympiad 2026 in Shanghai, China, from July 10th to the 20th, putting up our best performance ever with three honorable mentions and one student just two points shy of a bronze medal. An honorable mention is awarded to students outside the medal bracket for obtaining full marks in at least one question. It is indeed an honorable achievement given the incredibly demanding nature of the problems at the IMO.

​Kenya was represented by Gilbert Ongoro, Baraka Mulwa, Jed Odundo, Shawn Tanui, and Alvin Komu. Gilbert, Baraka, and Shawn were the recipients of the honorable mentions, a first for Kenya. The team was led by Dr. James Katende as team leader and Martin Mungai as deputy leader. They were also accompanied by Dr. Agnes Ngure as an observer.

​The students raised Kenya's flag high, and we proudly celebrate them. This success took a whole village to achieve. The support from CEMASTEA, AoA, CEMC, the IMO Foundation, and the University of Nairobi, alongside our dedicated coaches, teachers, and parents, was absolutely instrumental in this amazing performance.

​Coming hot off a dominant showing at the Eastern African Mathematical Olympiad and our first gold medal at PAMO 2026, it was immensely validating to see the team excel on the global stage against over 600 contestants from 117 countries. I am deeply proud that the journey we started 11 years ago is bearing such incredible fruit.

​This has been a monumental year for Africa, with several teams posting their best-ever performances at the IMO. There is certainly more work to be done, but this milestone deserves immense recognition. It is a massive morale booster for the road ahead.

Kenya Team at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad opening Ceremony in Shanghai China four days ago on the 14th of July 2026. We have five students from Alliance High, Mang'u and African Olympiad Academy. We look forward to a good performance from our champions.

History Made in Yamoussoukro! Team Kenya Crushes It at PAMO 2026!

The 33rd Pan African Mathematical Olympiad (PAMO 2026) in Côte d’Ivoire has just wrapped up, and our brilliant young minds have completely rewritten the history books! For the very first time, Kenya has secured 5th place overall in Africa, our best performance ever.

Our six powerhouse students (three girls and three boys) went toe-to-toe with the sharpest minds on the continent, bringing home an unprecedented haul of silverware:

🥇 Gilbert Ongoro (Alliance High School) – Captured Kenya’s first-ever PAMO GOLD MEDAL!
🥈 Baraka Mulwa & Kibe Ndung’u – Delivered fierce performances to grab SILVER MEDALS.
🥉 Tumi Nyagiro (African Olympiad Academy) & Juni Mumo (Alliance Girls) – Spectacular double-medalists, taking BRONZE in both the main pool and the PAMO for Girls (PAMOG) division!

We are bursting with pride and can't wait to welcome these heroes back when they land this Sunday, 5th July!

The math marathon doesn't stop here. Gilbert Ongoro and Baraka Mulwa are immediately shifting gears, flying out next week to represent Kenya on the ultimate global stage at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Shanghai, China (July 10th–20th).

As Head Coach, this milestone feels incredibly special. This year, our brilliant former Olympiad participants, Erika Oduor (who led the team on the ground), Dalton Omondi, Paul Angelo, and Deon Jones, officially stepped up to join the coaching bench. Honestly? Having them return to sharpen the next generation has made my work incredibly light. Alongside Deputy Collins Langat (Alliance Girls) and Nancy Nui (CEMASTEA), they completely transformed our preparation strategy.

This historic triumph is the fruit of intense training camps fueled by a powerful partnership between CEMASTEA, the University of Nairobi’s Department of Mathematics, and the CEMC at the University of Waterloo. We owe a massive debt of gratitude to our sponsors: the Global Talent Lab, the IMO Foundation, and a huge shout-out to the African Olympiad Academy for sponsoring the team's air tickets!

From a modest initiative started at UoN back in 2009, we now reach over 16,000 students annually. Our alumni are regularly heading to elite global institutions like MIT, Princeton, Stanford, and Harvard, proving Kenyan youth can compete with the best of the best worldwide.

To scale this and find hidden gems in every corner of Kenya, we need more hands on deck. We invite corporate partners and stakeholders to join us in building this intellectual infrastructure.

We did it, Kenya! We are the Champions of East Africa!

The final results are just out from the central secretariat in Kampala, and our brilliant young mathematicians didn't just win, they absolutely dominated the field at EAMO 2026! Out of the entire region, Team Kenya locked down the top two individual spots in a historic podium sweep.

Every single one of our 7 contestants is obtained an official regional accolade, marking a flawless 100% success rate for the team:

-Gilbert Amani Ongoro - Rank 1 Overall | EAMO 2026 Gold Medalist & the Undisputed Champion of East Africa!
-Baraka Mulwa - Rank 2 Overall | Gold Medalist, completing our historic 1-2 podium lockout!
-Tumi Nyagiro - Rank 10 Overall | Silver Medalist (An incredible, top-tier performance leading our girls!, Also the top girl overall)
-Kesha Wanjare - Bronze Medalist
-Kibe Ndung'u - Bronze Medalist

This monumental achievement wouldn't have been possible without the dedication of our students and teachers from Alliance High, Alliance Girls, and the African Olympiad Academy. You have made the entire nation proud. The numbers have spoken, and the crown belongs to Kenya!
