"For 3 to 4 hours every weekday, I walk around TUM selling sweets. This is my second semester running this business, driven by my goal of buying a smartphone. Since starting university, my lack of a smartphone has posed many challenges, especially since most communication from the University, my department, my church, and my family relies on WhatsApp. Additionally, I donโt have a laptop for my studies, which has also limited me. As a result, I often feel left behind on important matters and struggle to keep up with my academics.
Last semester, I faced a tough choice, with only 500 Bob separating me from poverty. Coming from a struggling family and being the firstborn, I couldnโt return to my parents to ask for a phone, especially since paying my fees was already a challenge. I turned to the Lord in prayer and decided to start my journey with just one packet of lollipops, setting my sights on selling one packet per day. Between classes, I would make my rounds around the university, determined not to return home until I had sold out the packet.
This semester, I decided to level up by adding tropical sweets to my offerings and set a target of selling a total of 4 packets of the 2 types of sweets daily. The journey hasnโt been easy, but I have received tremendous support from my classmates and friends.
During this time, a friend, Felix Odhiambo, generously shared notes with me to ensure I stayed up to date, while another friend from TUM Christian Union,
George Maina lent me his smartphone temporarily.
Now, with about 4 working days left, I am on the verge of reaching my target and achieving my goal. As a man of vision, I have learned the importance of starting with what you have, setting your targets, and doing everything it takes to achieve them.
As I reflect on this journey, I realize that it's not just about the smartphone anymore; itโs about the resilience, support, and community I've built along the way. Each lollipop I sell represents not just a step towards my goal but also a testament to my determination and the kindness Iโve experienced from those around me.
I hope my story inspires others facing similar challenges to believe in themselves, start small, and chase their dreams. With faith and hard work, anything is possible."
