Human Rights Festivals 2024

Equality.

It’s a concept that’s hard to pin down, yet at its core, we can agree that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and in rights (United Nations). No matter of religion, race, colour, s*x, language, s*xual orientation, age, or status. These characteristics are mere surface differences that mask our shared humanity. Never should they define our worthiness of fair, equal treatment.

When is World Human Rights Day

World Human Rights Day takes the 10th December 2024 to help educate the world about human rights and address this global issue. This year the theme is Equality – Reducing inequalities and advancing human rights. Reducing inequality requires tackling discrimination and biases deeply engrained in our society.

Oh death, where is thy sting?

I received news of the departure of my sister and fellow creative "Dida" on the very morning she passed on while on treatment. A fellow committee member at the Little Theatre Club shared a poster with the message from the family. I was devastated and for a minute my mind played back the death of my eldest brother, my father and my mother among the many incidences of death within my extended families and amongst close friends and or their loved ones and relatives.

I am one person who get so much overwhelmed with death of a loved one or someone i know to a point i either get extremely intoxicated or desert the the last respect.

This loss is personal to me because as the late was working with a local church drama group one of her high school friends, Beryl was a cast in a production i was part of at Gorofani Arts Troupe in the early 2000s. Beryl gave me the first opportunity to work with the late Winnie for the first time. Her committed to an assignment is immeasurable.

We staged the show at Little Theatre Club after which she was casted for other productions at the Club. She built a name for herself both as an actress for stage, then to being a musician and later growing into TV and film. I understand she went on and pursued other interests too.

The reason i am doing this note is for the same post i did when we lost Mzee Msiri my Senior Gilbert "Gilly" Owino. As theatre and film practitioners how prepared are we or how are our employers cushioning us for health and social security?

When i watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4O0Rb1CprY the message is clear that beyond mourning our departed loved one healthcare is expensive and creatives are not an exception as employees and employers and so we are adding our voice to the matter. This is advocacy very laudable - one death is far too many.

I am adding my voice to the conversation that healthcare should not cost an arm and a leg in an economy like ours, it beats logic for me that in this time and era and with advent of technology our system could not contain the occurrence.

I will leave this conversation for another day!

I rally all of us to join the family in this challenging time to the best of our ability.

Beyond the family, Winnie has also left behind a "Baby"; a foundation which she purposed to advance the very conversation & advocacy around the ailment.

We can leverage on the opportunity to keep her spirit within our midst.
