❌ Buying birds before preparing the pen.
Your poultry house, feeders, drinkers, brooder, and water source should be ready before the chicks arrive.
❌ Starting without a budget.
Many people budget for buying chicks but forget that feed, vaccines, medications, electricity, and labour will cost much more over the next 18 weeks.
❌ Buying from unreliable hatcheries.
Poor-quality chicks rarely become high-producing layers, no matter how well you manage them.
❌ Ignoring a vaccination plan.
Don’t wait for disease to strike before asking what vaccine to give. Have a vaccination schedule before your birds arrive.
❌ Not learning the basics.
Many beginners spend hundreds of thousands or even millions of naira on birds and equipment but hesitate to invest in knowledge. One management mistake can cost far more than the price of proper training.
❌ Starting too big.
