🌍 A small online meeting… but a great journey out into the world!
Students from the Umberto I School in Lanciano met online with students from Matinyani DEB School in Kenya, one of the associated schools involved by LUA, as part of the Erasmus+ project “Just Maps”.
During the meeting, the students shared interesting facts about their schools, talked about some of the project’s activities and discovered similarities and differences between their respective school environments.
There were plenty of fun moments too: the Italian students learnt a few words in Swahili, whilst the Kenyan students tried speaking Italian. The meeting ended with two short choruses sung together, surrounded by smiles, enthusiasm and a strong desire to connect beyond all distances! 🎶

During the Educator’s Conference 2026, held from May 1 to 3 in Mombasa, InEuropa and GAP Spain met with the Just Mappers group from the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, who are carrying out an inspiring participatory research project within their local community.
These young researchers are mapping their city to identify environmental challenges and develop concrete proposals to present to local institutions and stakeholders.
Among the topics they are working on:
🛺 traffic congestion and the environmental impact of tuk tuks
🍽️ food waste in local restaurants
🌱 mangrove planting to protect coastal ecosystems
A project that starts from observing everyday local realities to imagine more sustainable, inclusive and liveable cities.
The energy, awareness and motivation of these young Just Mappers reminded us of something simple yet powerful: change begins when we learn to look at our communities through new eyes ✨

I am happy to inform you that I had an online lecture about Just Maps today for the Research Centre for Nature Environment and Sustainability at University of Warsaw UCBS. The host appreciated the approach to boost local communities and youngsters especially by our project and wants connect us in future with the Institute for Teachers to show our project there. That might be a very good idea! 😃
Look for Just Maps on the program.

Sun is back here in Warsaw! Enjoying spring and greenery students went out yesterday to research a green area which is closest to school and which happen to be a beach at the Vistula river.
They were working with the materials prepared by GAP organisation and teachers: printed map with empty space to fill, chart with different groups of local citizens to include and pencils.
Students were very specific in their idea for improvement. And last but not least that was fun!

From School to Community: Erasmus Project and Legambiente Shaping Responsible Citizens
On Thursday, March 26, students from classes 1D and 1E of the “Umberto I” lower secondary school took part in “Puliamo il Mondo” (“Clean Up the World”), an initiative promoted by Legambiente, experiencing a meaningful morning focused on environmental awareness and active participation.
Accompanied by their teachers, Elisa Felicita Scrocco, Michele Tierri, Simona Spadano and Irene Rosato, the students headed to the park next to the municipal stadium. There, they met Paola Marrollo, Legambiente representative from Lanciano, who led an engaging introductory discussion, encouraging students to reflect on environmental protection and the importance of responsible everyday actions.
The activity was opened by a greeting from the Councillor for the Environment, Tonia Paolucci, who highlighted the key role young people play in building a more aware and active society.
Students then became true “guardians” of their local area. Equipped with gloves, litter pickers and materials provided by the Municipality of Lanciano, they took part in a symbolic clean-up activity, helping to restore care and dignity to a shared space that is often overlooked.
This initiative is part of the school’s wider civic education programme and the Erasmus project Just Maps, which focuses on active citizenship and aims to foster a sense of responsibility, participation and environmental awareness among young people.
