On the wake of cyber bullying and attacks, mobile phone crimes have increased;
Several parents have been receiving calls from numbers purporting to be from 'class teachers' (mostly if a class has a new class teacher for the term) or from a person claiming to be the 'doctor' attending to their sons/daughters that they are in danger and that you send some ransom to facilitate them to be attended in theatre at the local hospitals.
A case in point, a colleague was called this morning (15.05.2017) that his son who schools at a school in Meru town is in danger and urgently needs to be taken to theatre. The purported 'teacher' and 'doctor' described the class, name and shockingly that the bus having delayed this morning (The kid was picked late than usual today) the boy fell while alighting from the bus, - rushing to the assembly - and injured his leg.
After checking with the school, several such cases have been reported and forwarded to the police. One thing that is unique with all the reported cases, ONLY parents with MPESA balances or who regularly Transact via MPESA are targeted (is there insider job involved?). That being the case he was due for surgery in 15minutes otherwise his leg will be amputated......
The long and short of all this is that after ups and downs to ensure the boy is treated. The parents made several calls and also rushed to the school where they found the boy in class...
It is advised that before sending any Cash,
1. Check the numbers calling you to ascertain that its official School Numbers
2. Call The School immediately to confirm status of your Son/Daughter
3. Report the case to the nearest Police Station for action after checking and confirming that your So/Daughter is safe.
