Mutonga Primary School (named after a nearby river) is located near the rural trading centre of Igoji in Meru County in Kenya. The school is a low-cost school that strives to offer affordable quality education. It currently has day and boarding facilities for both boys and girls. The school began in January 1999 with 11 pupils (6 girls and 5 boys) and 5 teachers. By the end of the term the pupil p
opulation had grown to 25 pupils (12 girls and 13 boys). Currently there are more than 200 pupils and 15 trained teachers. The school contributed to creating employment opportunities in the community by employing individuals who started as untrained or semi-trained teachers with a passion for teaching. All the teachers have gradually upgraded their skills and are currently pursuing different levels of holiday training in Early Childhood Development (ECD). The school is currently one of the top three leading performers in the division and aims to raise the bar further towards competitive results within the district and national levels. Previous students have gone on to be doctors, engineers, successful business people, entrepreneurs and farmers. Through the mission and vision it is evident that the school not only aims to provide access to quality education but also to mold pupils with sound moral values. Rose Wangui, was an educationist, with vast experience in teaching and managing schools from 1970 to 1997. After graduating from the prestigious Makerere University with degree in education she held various positions as a teacher training tutor at Igoji Teacher’s College, Deputy Headmistress at Kangaru School and Headmistress at Maryhill Girls High School. She retired from the Teacher’s Service Commision in December 1998 and immediately began setting up Mutonga Primary School. Through her tireless efforts the school has become a beacon of education for the community. Most parents and care-givers have so much faith in the school that they have made sure all their children and grand-children study there. Also as an ardent farmer, the manager run a farm that continues to supply food and milk to the school. The school is currently being managed by PHP (People Helping People Foundation). The foundation has invested greatly in infrastructure and quality to make the school continue to excel in educating model pupils.
