I love this comment about teaching reading - the trick is understanding how to do this effectively and accepting that it doesn't have to happen all at the same time, discrete targeted intervention that is informed and intentional can be very effective.

"...we need to teach multiple units of phonology, of orthography, and of morphology and their interrelationships in both the spelling direction and the reading direction because English is a morphophonemic orthography (see Venezky and Nagy); and we need to teach interrelationships among phonology, orthography, and morphology (see Carlisle) and their amalgamation into word-specific spellings also integrated with vocabulary meaning (see Ehri). But we need to teach all of this in developmentally appropriate ways for words of different word origins (see Henry) and also create learning activities in which patterns are abstracted through statistical learning (see Treiman).

I doubt that there is ever a single variable that causes all learning of word spelling or word reading and has to be identified. In other words, it is like fine cuisine created from multiple ingredients. The question is not which single ingredient alone caused the lovely flavor or other taste sensation but rather which ones have to be in the mix for the overall outcome and quality of the experience. Or, it is like mathematics that invariably has multiple variables in the equation. '
