The Service of A legendary Teacher & Administrator.
This is none other than Mr. Nicholas Kamuru Njagi, a great teacher & an outstanding administrator who has offered a great service with distinction in North Eastern Region. Nicholas Kamuru Njagi qualified with a B.Ed. degree of Kenya University in 1991. Immediately after graduation, he was posted to Sheikh Ali School to teach English and History. Mr. Njagi moved to Wajir high school and later joined Border Point Secondary School in 2004. He has been at this school since that time, serving as a teacher, deputy principal and finally a principal.
Mr. Njagi has seen this school grow from a single stream school in a rented house to a three-streamed school over the years. Over 1,400 students have sat for KCSE under his watch and no doubt is a proud man for having produced such a number that has provided a workforce in different professionals in Kenya and abroad.
Mr. Njagi has spent his prime youthful period in Mandera county to make contribution to the education of our children. He has indeed sacrificed a lot for the sake of the people of Mandera to make a worthwhile contribution in the improvement of educational standards in the school. He was promoted to the position of deputy principal of Border Point Secondary and took the helm of leadership in 2007 after Mr. Olang the Principal left to join an NGO in South Sudan.
Mr. Njagi is a perfectionist who has stood for quality and performance of the school and indeed under his tutelage Border Point Secondary has seen great performance during his leadership. During this period many have joined universities and tertiary colleges for further studies. He is a disciplinarian who is not ready to comprise on disciple as he believes disciple and performance go together. He has played an important role in shaping character formation of many learners in the school.
Mr. Njagi has been a father figure in the school and many of the girls in the school have always fondly referred to him as ‘baba Njagi’. Girls in this school have always felt safe and he has provided them the protection they required. He was so close to ‘baba Njagi’ to the extent he would counsel on many matters concerning their lives.
Apart from excelling in the subjects he taught especially history, Njagi is endowed with wisdom and gifted in conflict resolution in the school. He has always been on the forefront in competently handling conflict among students or conflict between teachers and students or parents. He patiently and thoroughly investigated issues until he reached the bottom of the matter to get the truth. He never dealt with issues casually. He took his time to get the truth and did not accept half-truths!
In the neighbouring villages, he was accepted as an elder and was always invited to attend weddings or feasts that were held. Mr. Njagi commanded a lot of respect in the community and contribution appreciated. Mr. Njagi was well known for his big heart where he usually slaughtered during Eid days and joined the Muslim faithful in their celebrations.
This piece is not meant to praise Mr. Njagi; these are qualities that he has worked for and truly deserves. I am sure, many of the old students who have passed through his competent hands will bear me out and agree with me.
Mr. Njagi will always be remembered for firm stand during the mass exodus of teachers from Mandera following the bus attack where over 20 non locals teachers were killed. He stood with the community and refuted the general condemnation of the local people against a small number of teachers who wanted transfers. He truly stood with students of Mandera and appealed to the non-local teachers to remain to teach the Kenyan children in Mandera.
Now, the time has come for Mr. Njagi to leave Mandera and Border Point secondary. I am sure many of you will not be happy with this news. It will disappoint many. However, we need to be realistic. Mr. Njagi has served sincerely and honestly all this time. He has served with commitment and needs to be released to join his family that had sacrificed for the sake of Mandera.
I now appeal to all our old students, private schools, public schools, parents, teachers and the Mandera community to join us in giving Mr. Njagi a befitting send off. Please join us.
A party will be held at Border Point secondary school on 25th December 2021 in honour of our legendary teacher and administrator. I appeal to you all to join us make this dream a reality.
