FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL
Throughout my career journey, I have changed jobs up to seven times. My first day in every new office was filled with anxiety, with loads of questions on my mind.
This same anxiety filled me up every time my child was starting off in a new school. The fears were real especially in their early school years.
As the dedicated Mum I am, I took leave from work to take my little champ to school. We had visited the school with him to build familiarity, so it wasn't a strange environment. There we were in the parking, his cute school bag strapped on his bag. To say I was a nervous wreck in that moment would be an underestimate.
The little champ sighted one of his energy-filled peers running towards the teacher. Without much ado, my baby said 'bye Mummy' and ran off towards his teacher. Once with the teacher, he looked back with a big wide smile and off he went. No crying, no tagging, no pulling. That was it.
My three year old taught me some lessons that early morning.
- That often times the separation anxiety is more with the parent than the child. Over the years in childcare, I have witnessed this replay.
- That if the environment is right, young children adapt easily and settle fast.
