How to Recognize Communication Attempts

A communication attempt is any behavior a child uses to send a message—even when they don't use words yet.

Look for these signs:

● Pointing → “I want that.”
● Reaching → “Give it to me.”
● Looking at an item/person → “I’m interested.”
● Pulling your hand → “Help me.”
● Bringing an object → “Open this” or “Play with me.”
● Giving you an item → “Here” or “Help.”
● Making sounds → trying to get attention or express something.
● Gestures → waving, shaking head, nodding.
● Using PECS/AAC → intentionally selecting a message.
● Moving toward something → “I want to go there.”
● Pushing something away → “No” or “I don't want it.”
● Crying, whining, or yelling → may be communication of discomfort, frustration, wanting help, or wanting something.

⭐ The important part

Don't wait for perfect words.

When you notice an attempt, respond to the message and, when appropriate, model a simple communication form:

Child reaches for juice.
Parent: “Juice! You want juice.”
Then give the juice.

This teaches the child:

“When I communicate, people understand me.”

Parent reminder

Instead of asking, “What do you want?” repeatedly, try watching, interpreting, and responding to what your child is already communicating.

Every communication attempt is an opportunity to teach—not something to ignore because it isn't spoken language.
