Today, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Gudu, officially welcomed the 2026 first-year cohort to Rongo University during the matriculation ceremony held this morning. Addressing the new students alongside University Management, Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments and staff, the Vice Chancellor congratulated them on reaching this significant milestone and encouraged them to embrace discipline, curiosity, innovation and responsibility as they begin this exciting new chapter of their academic journey.

Dolly Parton created the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in honor of her father, a tenant farmer who never learned to read. She recalled that shortly before his death in 2000, he told her it was likely the most meaningful accomplishment of her life.

The program began in 1995 in her home county in Tennessee, reaching around 1,700 children with mailed books. Its structure stayed consistent from the start: a free hardcover picture book sent monthly, personally addressed to each child, from birth until age five. Children enrolled as infants end up owning roughly 60 books by the time they age out of the program.

By the mid-2020s, the initiative had expanded into five countries, and about one in seven American children under five received a book each month. Monthly mailings topped 3.5 million copies, and the program's total distribution surpassed 325 million books this year. Parton frequently named this literacy work, rather than her musical career, as the accomplishment that meant the most to her.

Parton passed away on Tuesday in Nashville at age 80.
