As global climate negotiations advance toward the next cycle of international climate action, sustained dialogue and strategic engagement remain critical in shaping Africa’s priorities and positioning.

The Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) is launching a Webinar Series: Roadmap to COP31–COP32, designed to convene policymakers, civil society actors, researchers, and climate justice advocates to reflect on current developments and outline strategic pathways toward upcoming COP processes.

The first webinar in this series will create space for informed discussion on emerging climate governance priorities, Africa’s expectations in the global climate negotiations, and the role of African stakeholders in advancing equitable climate solutions.

On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women who are shaping Africa’s climate justice movement.

Across the continent, women are not only on the frontlines of climate impacts—they are also leading the solutions. From grassroots organizing and community resilience building to policy advocacy and international climate negotiations, women continue to play a transformative role in advancing climate justice.

At the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice, women scholars, activists, practitioners, and leaders have consistently been at the heart of the movement. Through the program, women across Africa are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and networks necessary to engage in climate governance, shape policy debates, and drive locally grounded solutions that prioritize justice, equity, and sustainability.

NSSCJ continues to serve as a platform where women’s leadership is amplified—supporting a new generation of climate justice champions who are challenging inequalities, advancing feminist climate perspectives, and ensuring that Africa’s climate future is inclusive and equitable.

This year’s # reminds us that achieving climate justice requires recognizing and strengthening women’s leadership at every level—from communities to global negotiations.

NSSCJ Proud Moment: Meet Malango Kayira from Malawi at COP30 💚

This week at COP30, our very own NSSCJ Cohort V alumna, Malango Kayira, stood on the frontlines of global climate governance.

She served as a Junior Negotiator for the LDC Group, helping shape decisions on adaptation, finance, capacity-building, and justice for vulnerable countries.

She also moderated a major side event, spoke on global panels, and connected with youth leaders from around the world — bringing Malawi’s voice, Africa’s priorities, and a justice-centered vision to COP30.

Malango shared something powerful with us:

“COP30 was more than an event. It strengthened my resolve and showed me how powerful young people can be when meaningfully included.”

This is what NSSCJ stands for — empowering African youth to influence global decisions, champion climate justice, and lead with courage.

As Africa prepares for COP30 in Belém, Brazil, the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) is mobilizing a unified Non-State Actor (NSA) voice to shape the outcomes that matter most for the continent.

This video outlines PACJA’s key priorities for Belém — consolidating the voices of communities, youth, women, Indigenous Peoples, and workers to ensure their aspirations, demands, and expectations are reflected in Africa’s common position.

It also highlights efforts to rebuild trust among partners and align on the Belém Roadmap for adaptation, finance, and a just transition.

PACJA’s engagement in Belém builds on the Africa Climate Summit outcomes and the Addis Declaration, reaffirming the movement’s commitment to people-centered, equitable climate action.

Bridging Local Action and Global Accountability: African Youth in Adaptation Leadership 🌍

Last week, members of the Climate Justice Impact Fund for Africa (CJIFA) — in collaboration with NSSCJ alumni — convened a virtual dialogue on Africa’s contribution to the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) Indicator Framework.

Moderated by James Kanyi, the session spotlighted emerging African climate leaders including Eddah Kipyegon, Gedyon Mergesa, Anna Shampi, and Hope Mandala, who shared how youth-led innovations are shaping locally informed adaptation and resilience models.

From community-driven resilience planning in India to climate-smart agribusiness and youth advocacy in Africa, the conversation highlighted the vital link between local knowledge, adaptation justice, and global accountability.

As part of PACJA’s broader efforts to strengthen the adaptation movement through CJIFA and NSSCJ, this session reaffirmed that when young people lead, communities adapt — and climate justice moves from vision to impact. 💚

💡 “It’s not just about waste—it’s about dignity.”

For Meshack Otieno, founder of Amazing Grace Green Solutions, the NSSCJ Cohort V training was the missing link between grassroots experience and structured advocacy.

Through sessions on urban resilience, youth governance, and climate entrepreneurship, he deepened his understanding of how everyday action feeds into national adaptation strategies.

Today, Meshack:

- Diverts 300+ kg of waste monthly using community recycling

- Runs Black Soldier Fly (BSF) composting sites to turn organic waste into nutrient-rich byproduct

- Leads flood-preparedness workshops in Kisumu

With the tools and networks provided by NSSCJ, Meshack has become more than an innovator—he’s now a regional advocate for circular economy and youth-led green job creation.

“Climate justice means addressing the crisis while acknowledging inequality.”

For Sarah Apollo, a SCEJU beneficiary and informal waste actor from Kisumu, joining the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ) Cohort V was more than just a learning opportunity—it was a turning point.

Sessions on Extended Producer Responsibility, zero-waste innovation, and youth leadership opened her eyes to structural gaps and policy blind spots in waste management.

Today, Sarah runs “Zero Waste Cafés” in her community—educational gatherings that empower households and informal workers with simple tools for segregation, composting, and plastic reuse.

She's also advocating for a Social Enterprise Policy in Kisumu to institutionalize support for informal waste actors like herself. “Climate justice starts with inclusion,” she says. “We cannot afford to leave anyone behind.”

Sarah has turned training into action—and action into policy change.

NSSCJ Alumni Spotlight: Leading Climate Adaptation in Djibouti 🇩🇯

Last week, Ahmed Mogola, President of the One and Indivisible Youth Movement of Djibouti and alumnus of the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ), delivered a powerful keynote during the National Youth Day for Climate Adaptation in Djibouti.

Organized under the patronage of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, in partnership with the United Nations System Coordination Office and the Global Center for Adaptation, the event mobilized 140 young leaders to shape Djibouti’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs).

“NDCs are not just administrative documents,” Ahmed said. “They are commitments to build a resilient future — and Djibouti’s youth have a central role to play.”

Through NSSCJ, Ahmed and many young Africans are connecting climate education to real-world leadership, ensuring that youth are not just participants, but co-authors of national adaptation and resilience strategies.

From Learning to Leadership ✊🏾🌱
How SCEJU beneficiaries are redefining climate justice after Cohort V.

Across Kisumu, Makueni & Nakuru, youth, women, and informal waste actors trained under the Strengthening Civil Society Engagement for a Just and Sustainable Urbanization (SCEJU) project—co-funded by the 🇪🇺 European Union—are turning knowledge into impact.

💬 Ruth Maingi, Director of CWSHI in Makueni:

“I used to see climate justice mainly as an environmental issue. Now I understand it’s about fairness, inclusion, and rights.”

She’s led waste segregation campaigns, distributed 250 waste bins across 10 villages, and launched WASH programs for women and girls—linking climate action with dignity and equity.

♻️ In Kisumu, Sarah Apollo of Miya Ywech CBO is driving change through Zero Waste Cafés, school Eco-Clubs, and policy advocacy on the circular economy and EPR.

“Africa contributes the least to climate change but suffers the most. That reality drives my work now.”

Through digital training, mentorship, and the Young Sustainable Urbanization Digital Activists (YOSUDA) platform, SCEJU is connecting community action to governance systems—ensuring that climate justice begins at the grassroots.

For the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ), born in Kenya and now shaping youth leadership across Africa, this day is a reminder that environmental protection begins with justice.

Our alumni and partners are restoring wetlands, leading community clean-ups, advancing sustainable waste management, and pushing for climate policies that protect both people and planet.
