Art lessons in the slums!;)

Handicrafts, sports, dancing, music classes after school lessons — this is how we live in the modern world.

But in the slums, even attending school with hot meals every day is great luck. That’s why we didn’t launch the art classes immediately, but now time has come!
They are now held once a week at Tabor school. Children draw with great pleasure and love their teacher so much.🫶🏿

School subjects are important — that goes without saying. But we want to broaden the kids’ minds as well, show them the world of creativity and inspiration.

There are still many plans ahead — our next dream is to organise dancing and singing classes at the school.

Happy Birthday, Tabor school!🥳

2 years ago, the children must live foundation team arrived in Kenya to open a school for hundreds of the poorest children in the slums.

And this is what we’ve done in two years:

• Children who used to eat on average once a day now have two regular meals a day, including fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs and even sweets; food that is completely unavailable to slum dwellers.

• For the first time in their lives, the children have traveled outside the slums: they visited a zoo and an amusement park.

• The doctor conducts regular medical examinations at school. Treatment is prescribed and carried out, if necessary.

• Children learn to write, read, count, learn languages, have art and nature study classes.

• We have 10 employees, and they are all slum dwellers for whom it is a great blessing to have a stable job.

• Finally, we managed to set up a playroom where the kids will play with toys and read books.

We’ve passed another planned medical examination at the school.

Earlier volunteer doctors helped us (professionally, but irregularly), and now we have entered into a long-term agreement with a good clinic. The pediatrician arrives on the appointed date once in three months — with the necessary equipment for a preventive examination.

The doctor examines our children one by one, starts a card for the primary patients, gives recommendations to everyone (the main ones are: good nutrition with protein foods, fruits, physical activity and washing hands before eating).

We have good news: almost all our children are in good health (by the standards of slums). Three of them have some problems, and they will soon go to the clinic to clarify the diagnosis and receive the necessary drugs.

Take a look at the photos of our children "before" and "after” — before entering Tabor Happy School and after months of study.

Of course, we do notice the difference.😉

But one pure experiment has unpredictably taken place: the sponsors — our caring friends from all over the world, in response to letters with photos and news, began to clarify, saying: “Is this definitely the child who I donate for?”; “I don’t recognize my pupil, maybe you’ve sent the wrong pictures?”

But no, we could not confuse the children.😅
They just really became "different". They stopped being afraid of cameras. They now smile openly and feel safe. Their health has improved. They just feel much better — that’s the key.

But such miracles are clear and possible to create. At school, we give children hot meals twice a day and do regular check-ups. We smile a lot, laugh, play, and, of course, we study and maintain interest in learning.

Therefore, nothing impossible, nothing incredible happens. Just life, just childhood, just the way it should be.

We work not only with children, but with their parents as well. Our aim is to provide as much help as possible – at the school and beyond.

We teach and feed kids from the poorest families of Kibera slums. The starving ones. Therefore, even talks about the importance of education, children’s safety and health are crucial. We gather to discuss these issues – our teachers, staff and parents.

The social worker and school administrator are always in touch with the families, they try to stay aware of problems, help where possible. And the parents do understand it all – they do their maximum for the children.

Such complex work with the community is already bringing results, and we believe that this is how you can change the society step by step. Even below the poverty line in the African slums.

Don’t get sick in the slums. There are no treatment possibilities.

Even if it's just measles. Or malaria, popular in Africa. Medicine + analysis cost about $7. But still.

People in Kibera have no money for doctors or their prescriptions. Children are no exception. They say: “a child is either alive or dead. The concept of "sick child" is irrelevant.”

In Kibera and in the outskirts there are a few clinics established by missions or public organizations, but their help is available to an extremely limited number of people.

Therefore, the fact that since July we’ve been resuming regular check-ups at Tabor school is great news. This is the only way to prevent or quickly identify and treat many children's sores.

Bronchitis, otitis media, helminths, earth flea larvae and other parasites are the most common cases of therapeutic efforts.

Meet our medical supervisor - Dr. Haggai, clinician, general practitioner. Now he will be aware of the clinical histories of all our children. He is also responsible for supervising work of colleagues and specialists, if their help is required.
On average, we plan to conduct field clinics once every two to three months.

Imagine a list of things associated with childhood: dolls, robots, puzzles, bright books and so on. Here, in the slums of Kibera, there is nothing.

Kids play with whatever they find – bottle caps, for example. It may be hard to believe, but we visited the homes of numerous families. And the complete absence of toys, of course, means a lot.

That is why in our school there must be the children's corner! With a mini-library, soft floor pillows (to rest during breaks – today they are used to sleeping at desks), and, of course, toys and board games.

We will be grateful for your help. It seems that today this is the best thing you can spend an extra dollar on – on a true childhood in a very, very gloomy place of the world. Where, despite it all, people still smile, laugh and thank you warmly.😉

5 new kids have been studying in our school for two months and making progress.🙋🏿‍♂️

For some of them there is still no guaranteed budget. We can't leave our students: we teach them and feed, every month urgently seeking funds. There are also additional expenses – on examination sheets, workbooks and stationary.

We’ve got some stories to share.

The boy's name is Peter Nzioka. He is 8 years old, our second grade pupil. Peter had not studied anywhere before, except for the home lessons that he was given by his older brother and sister.
Three children are only raised by mother – she sells charcoal in Kibera, and the income of the family is extremely low. However, the woman is trying to educate her children. Somehow she pulled the elders, and there was no money left for the younger. Mom was incredibly happy to learn that the youngest son is now a schoolboy. And that she doesn’t have to pay for his education.

And this is Diane Monique. Diane is 7. We took her to prep class, on the vacant place. Her mother, a plastic container seller in Kibera, has long been "in line for enrollment." As soon as the woman found out that the principle of enrolling in our school is reverse selection – we accept the most vulnerable – she said that this was their case and she would wait. Diane’s mother has no alternatives. She almost cried when she saw her youngest daughter in a brand new uniform.

Received a package from Russia!☺️

A few days ago our manager Alfred brought the parcel from our friends Новая школа

It was a real surprise for the kids who have just returned to school after the Easter holidays;)

📦We began to unpack together: there were the favourite toys and books of children from Russia that they decided to share with their African peers. Felt-tip pens, coloring books, puzzles, stationery… How glad we were!

Most children from the slums have no toys at all – or only one toy: presented by our Santa Claus at school for Christmas.

As for books, we are happy to enrich the school library. And we hope that soon we will be able to equip the library corner.📚

People often ask us: is it worth sending some stuff to Kibera by mail?

Of course it is!🙏🏾

Although there is one thing – commissions and taxes when sending and receiving parcels. The receipt tax for Kibera is very high. Therefore, if the parcel contains something that can be bought in Kenya, then it is optimal to buy it on the spot by sending money for the purchase.

In any case, contact us – and we will discuss which option of assistance is preferable.

Today is Easter in Kenya.

We had a festive dinner with chicken at school – still the favourite and rare dish in the slums.
Unfortunately the eggs didn’t arrive, but we forgive our laying hens.🙈

The main thing is that the holiday took place. For children from the slums, only school holidays exist, and each is remembered vividly. It’s not only about treats, but also the atmosphere of love and friendship.

In a great mood we are finishing the Easter holidays.☀️

Urgent disaster news.🙏🏿

Recently in Kibera there was a big fire – the whole neighborhoods burned out. And among them are the homes of three of our students: Happy Nelvia, Barbel Bravell and Lavine Atieno. The families have lost everything they had.

So far, we are providing urgent assistance: buying mattresses, blankets and food. Restoring a dwelling costs extremely by the standards of the slums. Renting a house - from one and a half thousand Kenyan shillings ($10) per month. We calculated that families would need ~15,000 ksh for basic necessities.

Finally the moving is over!

Children study in the new house, luxurious by slum standards: walls instead of plywood partitions, soundproofing and the possibility of comfortable work in two neighboring classes.😉 Furniture, light and water.

The parents are happy. The kids are delighted. The cook is finally cooking in the new comfortable kitchen!🙂

Together with the teachers our team is very pleased that the school is developing so quickly.

And although there is a lot of work ahead – not all classes are equipped, things need to be bought in addition – the necessary minimum is already done. So, we can study!☺️
