Do Striped Hyenas Have a Sweet Tooth? First Evidence of Honey Consumption by a Hyaenid

Here, we present the first documented evidence of honey consumption by a hyaenid species. During a community-led camera trap survey in October 2024 at the Kwenia Vulture Sanctuary, Kenya, an adult striped hyena was photographed carrying a large honeycomb in its mouth. This observation suggests ingestion of honey, beeswax and bee larvae, providing nutritional, medicinal or hydration benefits. Our finding expands current knowledge of hyena dietary plasticity and highlights the limitations of conventional diet analysis methods in detecting rare food items such as honey. It underscores the value of complementary observational tools, such as camera, trapping in capturing elusive or unexpected dietary behaviours.

The brown hyaena may be elusive, but its role in the wild is impossible to ignore.

From the Savanna to the Kalahari Desert and to the coastal dunes of Angola and Namibia, it keeps ecosystems healthy — clearing carcasses, spreading seeds, and even influencing how big predators hunt. 🏜️🌱

Yet habitat loss, conflict and poaching are impacting this Near Threatened species outside of protected areas.

Protecting the brown hyaena means protecting an entire landscape that depends on it.

✅Global Measures to Conserve the Striped Hyena Launched at CITES CoP20

As part of the 20th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES CoP20), a side event titled “The Striped Hyena Under Threat” was held.

The event, organized by the National Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Climate Change together with the Republic of Tajikistan, focused on the urgent need for coordinated international measures to conserve the striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena).

Discussions emphasized that a shift in the global approach to the species is necessary not only to preserve biodiversity, but also to reduce the risks of zoonotic disease transmission. Participants also explored prospects for regional cooperation, potential funding sources, and ways to integrate striped hyena conservation into national biodiversity strategies.
The organizers highlighted that shaping a new narrative about the striped hyena — portraying it as a vital ecological ally rather than an “enigmatic” predator — is a crucial step toward strengthening conservation efforts.

Nepal's Forgotten Scavenger: The Striped Hyena

While Nepal often celebrates its success in conserving charismatic species like the Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), one-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), and Asiatic elephant (Elephas maximus), one shy and misunderstood creature is quietly disappearing, the striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena).

It is among Nepal's most overlooked carnivores. Despite playing a vital role in the ecosystem, it rarely receives the attention or protection it deserves.
Hyena tourism can be a new alternative for wildlife tourism in NepalAs Nepal moves forward in its conservation journey, the question remains: will the nation recognize and act to protect this forgotten scavenger, or will the striped hyena continue to fade into darkness, a silent loss in the shadow of louder events?
