June 2025 Kakamega Book Club Meeting

A blended meeting discussed Barbara Boswell's "The Comrades Wife".

The book explores the life and times of Dr Anita Fredricks, a university don who finds it hard to co-exist with men in both academia and marriage. South Africa and the world at large is depicted as a patriarchal stage where man seems to walk away with all manner of sins, including in academia.

In the words of the author, the entire stretch of South Africa is unsafe for a woman and one has to tread, really, really carefully.

One wonders, going by the narrative whether man was made for marriage. While women in the text grapple with the elusiveness in marriage, men seem to have made up their mind on what they want in marriage with women their little pawns who are lined up in a conveyor for their tasting and testing!

What a meeting! What a reading!

KAKAMEGA BOOK CLUB (KBC) end of year meeting and AGM started and ended well.

We started with a Thanksgiving Service led by Hon. Rev. Catherine Kituyi-Wekola followed by book club meeting and elections of new officials for the book club and its welfare wings.

Congratulations to the elected officials.

The meeting ended in a party where an unlucky goat 🐐 had lost it life culminating in the refreshments and extended refreshments.
