Ms Flora Chirikona Nyangweso is studying the efficiency of nanofibers produced from water hyacinth to adsorb toxic perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) from wastewater. PFAAs belong to a group of toxic chemicals utilized all over the world in many industrial processes such as coatings in food packing, firefighting, and stain repellents. Since these chemicals are not naturally degraded they accumulate and persist in the environment. Bioadsortion is one of the ways currently studied to reduce pollution. The selection of water hyacinth is particularly interesting since it may lead to an additional option for utilisation of this aggressively growing invasive aquatic w**d. The findings will provide alternative for sustainable management of PFAAs and help conserve surface water resources.
