Subject: Request for a Permanent Space for the Deaf Community in Kakuma
Dear Sir/Madam,
We, the Deaf Community in Kakuma Refugee Camp together with members of the host community, respectfully write to request your support in securing a permanent place owned by the Deaf Community. This space will serve as a center where deaf persons from both refugee and host communities, and from different nationalities, can come together to learn, share, and support one another.
Both refugee and host community deaf persons face challenges such as limited access to education, communication barriers, and social exclusion. Without a permanent space, our activities remain scattered and unsustainable. Having a place that belongs to the deaf community will allow us to:
Establish a safe and accessible environment where deaf persons from both refugee and host communities can freely gather and interact.
Strengthen unity and cultural exchange among deaf people from diverse nationalities.
Conduct long-term learning, skills training, and empowerment programs.
Promote inclusion, reduce isolation, and ensure equal participation in community life.
Build a sustainable foundation for future generations of deaf persons in Kakuma.
We kindly request the Department of Refugee Affairs (DRA) to consider allocating or supporting the establishment of this permanent space, recognizing the unique needs and rights of persons with disabilities within both the refugee and host communities.
We are committed to managing and maintaining this place responsibly and to working closely with your office and other partners to ensure it benefits all deaf persons in Kakuma.

KSL cohort 1 2023 congratulations🎉🎉🎉 to you all.
You guys made HLB fraternity proud and happy, I personally appreciated the few students who dedicated their time to complete course.
I know we had bumps or challenges during classes but we managed to overcome together.
My encouragement to you is that keep practicing the little advance skill you have acquired in KSL, put it in practice by volunteering to help our brothers and sisters who are deaf and have difficulties in communication, you can also train or lecture others who want to gain knowledge in KSL on the same.

‎ The theme for this year’s International Literacy Day is “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces.” The theme is an opportunity to reevaluate the fundamental importance of literate learning environments and to promote resilience and ensure high-quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all. Globally, progress is falling behind on achieving SDG 4 –inclusive and equitable education for all. Nearly 49% of children with disabilities worldwide are likely to have never attended school, and if they do, they are less likely to succeed than their peers.
The campaign asks leaders to deliver on six pieces of ‘homework’ to ensure more inclusive education systems:
Sociology homework: Include children with disabilities in mainstream education and collect data that includes everyone
Economic homework: Invest in inclusive training, so that teachers can respond to diverse learning needs and develop flexible curriculums for all children
Politics homework: Implement policies, plans and budgets to include and support children with disabilities
Computing homework: Tackle the digital divide and ensure digital learning and other education technologies are accessible for all
Maths homework: Allocate sustainable financing for inclusive education so that all children with disabilities can learn
Design homework: Involve people with disabilities in all stages of inclusive education design and make sure their voices are heard
Get involved and add your voice to the campaign by using the social media toolkit to call on leaders to act now.,
