St. Pauls' High School are on Strike!

Reason? MOCK Examinations.

The Mock examinations have for some time generated a lot of debate in the education sector. They have been associated with strikes in secondary schools and also viewed as a cash cow for teachers in secondary schools. But learners who do poorly in these examinations do not necessarily pass well in the final examinations and vice versa. For the last five years, Mathematics, English and Kiswahili compulsory subjects have continued to perform minimally in the Mock examinations, yet performance in KCSE examinations in some schools has been above average in these subjects. To what extend then is mock performance a predictor of the final results? The real reason behind these strikes is that the MOCK exams don't solve anything in the students' performance. They just add anxiety and fear of the final exams (KCSE)

In 2015, The Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (Kessha) pledged to embrace the Ministry of Education's directive banning mock examinations. This came amid a clarification from the ministry that the ban did not include internal mocks.

Education Cabinet Secretary (at the time) Jacob Kaimenyi clarified that individual schools are free to do internal mocks, saying the directive only targeted joint mock examinations. Speaking in Kisumu, Prof Kaimenyi said joint examinations among schools in zonal or regional clusters were banned due to student unrest.

Kessha however said the ministry should do more in mainstreaming the education sector in a bid to restore sanity in schools instead of pe***ng the unrest on mock examinations alone.

We don't support strikes in schools, we just want sanity to be restored and key players in the Education Sector to sit down and solve this menace.
