Tom Mboya University was honoured to participate in a consultative meeting convened by the Land Surveyors’ Board, bringing together universities offering Surveying, Geomatics Engineering and Geospatial Engineering programmes to deliberate on the future of geospatial education and professional practice in Kenya.
Held at the CBK Institute of Monetary Studies, Ruaraka, the forum brought together academia, professional regulators and key stakeholders to strengthen the alignment between university training, professional recognition, registration and the evolving needs of the geospatial sector.
Representing Tom Mboya University was Dr. Godfrey Ogonda, who joined colleagues from other universities, the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), the Council of Governors (CoG), and the Land Surveyors’ Board in discussions aimed at enhancing graduate competence, promoting innovation and strengthening professional pathways within the surveying and geospatial profession.
Among the key issues discussed were: Recognition and accreditation of Surveying, Geomatics and Geospatial Engineering programmes; Development of clear professional progression pathways for technicians, technologists and graduates; Curriculum harmonization and stronger collaboration between universities, industry and professional bodies; and Legal and policy reforms to support a competent, future-ready geospatial workforce.
The meeting also proposed the establishment of an Association of Surveying and Geospatial Engineering Chairpersons to foster collaboration, curriculum alignment and innovation across universities.
