Refugee School Girls Attend 2017 Girls Conference

150 refugee school girls from various schools under UNHCR education partner Lutheran World Federation Kenya (LWF) are attending a Girls’ Conference in Dadaab. Dubbed The Girls’ Conference 2017, and funded by Church of Sweden, it is a maiden activity in LWF interventions on girls’ empowerment in Dadaab operation.

The conference kicked off with a clean-up of Dadaab market to support the recent Government of Kenya ban on plastic and was hugely appreciated by the Host Community.

‘We encourage more agencies to come up with more initiatives that involve us and refugees to keep our environment clean. We will continue to support refugees who have now become part and parcel of our community,’ said Bashir, a Dadaab resident.

Some of the issues to be discussed at the conference are:
• Achieving your dreams
• Gender roles and gender stereotype
• Passion and career path

The conference is expected to expose the girls to practical classic solutions to girl child education amidst the many barriers faced by refugee school girls in the Dadaab context. The 3 day conference will be facilitated by key female guest speakers from similar backgrounds but who have excelled in education, business, careers and philanthropy.

The girls will also be empowered as peer educators and mentors to other girls in the 7 LWF-operated primary schools in Hagadera camp.

As at 4th October 2017, the Dadaab refugee complex had a population of 239,511 refugees and asylum seekers, and consists of four camps: Hagadera, Ifo, Ifo 2 and Dagahaley. 96.19% of the refugees are from Somalia. The first camp was established in 1991, when refugees fleeing the civil war in Somalia started to cross the border into Kenya. A second large influx occurred in 2011, when some 130,000 refugees arrived, fleeing drought and famine in southern Somalia.
