IS TVET DOING ENOUGH TO FIGHT COVID -19 PANDEMIC?
Given the prevalence of practical skills training taking place in TVET workshops and labs, TVET institutions could even transfer their supplies of equipment and skills to hospitals and other institutions on the frontline of the COVID-19 response. In some other parts of the world however, TVET institutes are reported to collaborate with the private sector on the design and production of materials such as surgical masks and disinfectants. Some have been asked to produce and distribute hand sanitizer among local communities while others have shown efforts to initiate trainings for medical equipment technicians, other healthcare workers as well as factory workers and call center workers, others have even gone ahead to obtain access to training materials on ventilator machines. With such enormous efforts in place from TVETs in other parts of the world, the main question is; are TVET institutes in Kenya doing enough to fight COVID-19 pandemic?
